Rising Stars: Meet Relic Rhymes of Buckhead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Relic Rhymes

Hi Relic, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in New Jersey, in a city called Plainfield, and relocated to Atlanta in 2022 to take my music to the next level. I started making music a few years ago, but I didn’t take it seriously until well after Covid. I was always an entertainer and loved making people happy so at age 12 I started working on comedy stages. As one of the youngest comedians working in New York, I started getting used to the idea of making music around the time of the soundcloud era in 2017 since there were so many artists that I (ignorantly) felt I could outperform. Since then, I’ve been determined to keep improving myself and my sound as we now celebrate my biggest year yet with only more room to grow.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It felt as if every single day had an obstacle, and every other day, there was one that was insurmountable. Obviously there were money issues and time issues, but of course there were always deeper problems too. Looking back, it’s almost as if all the problems blended together in a way that I can’t even pinpoint. When I first came to Atlanta, I was living out of my car with no place to stay for a few months. Me and my best friend were always able to wrangle together maybe $300 for a music video but couldn’t manage to get $10 to feed ourselves. On most days I managed off some peanut butter and water from the fountain at the gym (courtesy of a few free trials). After we got on our feet, I had dealings with certain people that ended up wasting a lot of my time. In retrospect, I take all these challenges as lessons, even though I’m sure I’d rather not deal with the challenges at all given a second chance.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I take pride in knowing that my music is very unique to me. I draw inspiration from a lot of people, but no one can pinpoint my sound as anybody else’s. Frankly, I don’t sound like anyone. And I’m glad. I recently released a 10 song mixtape, and I have another on the way.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish there was a easier way to tell people to “keep going” because it seems like that is the most difficult thing I can say. It’s hard to keep going. You’re going to feel like you don’t want to keep going. Not to mention, it’s a piece of advice that doesn’t have a clear end: “keep going,” where? How will you know when you get there? For what reason?
I especially wish that there was a way to live life and pursue your dreams without obstacles and challenges. But I suppose no one would even want to at that point.
A fact that I will leave you with is: we live on borrowed time. So I guess you have to keep going because there’s not much of a choice.
