Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Davis
Hi Shannon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The most creative moment in my life is now, as all of my education, personal interest, curiosities, and exposure have culminated in a profession in design and lens-based art. I started as a graphic designer but my first job out of college was at CNN. There I was exposed to the world of broadcast design. A few years later I was asked to be part of the team that launched the channel Turner Classic Movies which allowed me to hone branding and creative directing skills. Having access to TCM’s vast movie library had a profound influence on me. Watching decades of classic films molded the way I approach visual storytelling. I started to direct promos, adding motion to my conceptual ideas. Now I meld the mediums of design and photography seamlessly.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have been very lucky that people along the way have recognized my talents, given me opportunities, and knew they could trust me to make great work. I have always had a high level of expectation for myself and value hard work. At the same time, that can add extra pressure. At this point in my career, I know how to balance results with my expectations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize as a consultant in brand identity design and conceptual photography. My design clients value my approach to conceptual thinking as we live in a highly curated and branded world. Everything from logos and social media posts to websites needs to reflect a clear visual voice. Being able to look at all aspects of design and find the perfect throughline to connect a client’s brand is always exhilarating for me.
My photography projects are rooted in concepts focusing on a sense of place and home. Though they are based on personal experience, it is the universal feeling of wanting to connect that I think allows my work to resonate with audiences. I am represented by Spalding Nix Fine Art.
For the last 16 years, I have been a part-time professor at SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design where I share my experience in motion design and branded advertising with the next generation. I am proud of this investment.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I tell my students that to be a strong creative, to develop a unique perspective beyond clichés, you need to care about people, want to walk in their shoes, have a sense of curiosity and openness. My parents were naturals at taking an interest in people and community and I learned from osmosis the important value of connection.
