Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawntay Mathews.
Hi Shawntay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Thank you for having me! I’m excited to be apart of your platform. EmD & L.L.C. which stands for Emerald Designs was founded out of my pure enjoyment for creating beautiful spaces that are tangible to the average person.
As a child, I sketched, painted, created artwork and constantly rearranged my bedrooms. My father was a true craftsman and my grandmother exposed me to chic interior design styles. However, my younger self didn’t conceptualize interior design as a career path as natural as decorating and design is for me. I pursued the sciences and got a degree in biology. The creating and designing never stopped. I constantly helped family and friends with their events and home projects. Finally in 2019, I decided to start my interior design business. It took a lot of courage and planning. I took a few courses and gathered as much information as possible from other business owners. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey into interior design had many challenges. Mostly because I had a lot to learn about running a business. The biggest challenge has been marketing. EmD is ran solely by me and my husband. This requires me to wear many many hats and do research on a multitude of topics outside of designing to keep the business running smoothly. It can get overwhelming at times.
I love what I do and that alone has allowed me to overcome the challenges and keep doing business.

EmD provides full interior design services including staging, furniture and accessory shopping, virtual design and custom decor.
We are known for our professionalism, accessibility and creating unique, comfortable, stylish spaces for everyday people. You don’t have to be rich or make 6 figures to hire an interior designer.
