Today we’d like to introduce you to Shuhan Yang.
Hi Shuhan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in a small urban area in Hunan, China. My single mother cared for me when we had the bare minimum and had to rent an unpainted apartment with no furniture. I never felt like I didn’t have much because I was so loved and supported by her. I was provided access to the internet at a young age and discovered how different cultures could be; it inspired me so much about where to go with my artistic interests.
In the Chinese education system, I felt trapped. It was difficult for me to keep up with the classes and exams, and my hoppy and interests were almost forbidden.
Luckily, I was given the opportunity to be an exchange student at Franklin, Indiana, and that experience later helped me go to SCAD for my undergrad degree. I was able to explore a different side of the earth and it was incredible and eye-opening. I got to improve my art in an academic, diverse, open-minded environment and I wouldn’t get to where I am today without it.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wasn’t been able to go home and see my family ever since I started college in 2018. Originally I wanted to go home every two years, however, it is just impossible with the price and other conditions. I had to go through the loss of a family member and my pet dog that I grew up with being so far away from them. However I felt very lucky to have a partner and we are like a family here in Georgia, which helped me through the tough times.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Being able to study in the US, I had a deeper understanding of culture and society. My English improved tremendously over the years and other than art, I have developed a strong interest in languages, translation, literature, and social studies. They give me new inspiration about incorporating ideas into visual designs.
