Rising Stars: Meet Stephen Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Scott.

Hi Stephen, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Creating music has been a part of my life since birth. Growing up, my parents (mostly my father) would always bring me around talented musicians mainly because he was a musician himself. Music had such a heavy influence on my life that I decided I would pursue a career in not only producing music but educating and marketing music as well. Although I’ve been around music and learned so much about it growing up, I didn’t decide to make it my career until the year 2019, after I graduated from Arabia Mountain High. I always had a passion for making beats and writing lyrics for songs, but it wasn’t until I graduated that my passion for creating became more than just a passion. At first, I was just making beats during my free time, I would go to my college’s library with my laptop and headphones in my bag and use the time in between classes to cooking up a quick beat. I did this so often that people who’d come into the library often would see me and ask what I was doing and I’d show them the beats I had made. Almost everyone who listened to my beats liked them which motivated me to go even harder.

As time went by, I got better at making beats and more and more people would tell me that they liked them but I began to feel like I wasn’t taking advantage of the talent I had. So I started to look up ways to make money as a music producer. After investing countless hours into improving my craft and understanding the music business. It wasn’t until we had gone on lockdown during the pandemic that I decided to go full throttle with my music career. On day one of lockdown, I wrote out a plan that would change my life in the next year from then. I disciplined myself and stuck to the plan even on days I had no motivation. Eventually, we got off of lockdown and I felt that I had everything I needed to take my plan to the next level. Ever since then, I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work at multiple studios in Atlanta and network with artists, producers, audio engineers, A&Rs, etc… in my city.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not, if the road were smooth, I believe that I wouldn’t have much of a story to give. Some challenge I faced while trying to start my music business was making the right choices financially to make sure I could fund my business. Like most people, I was working a job before the pandemic began. I worked two jobs back to back which made me enough to have gas in my car and pay for things like food, going out with friends every once and a while, and money just to have in case of emergencies. Growing up, I was always pretty good at handling money. I used to run a brownie and tutoring business in high school which helped me to make the right decisions on how I would spend my money. However, during the lockdown, my streams of income were little to none. So I had to make what I had last me until I could start making money from my business. At first, it was hard to not spend money because there were things that I wanted but I knew that I had to focus on the things that would support my future and not on the things that would give me temporary satisfaction. Over time it became easier to save my money and spend it on the things that really mattered. I eventually began to make a little money off of my beats and immediately invested the money I had made right back into the business. Although at the start, I initially wasn’t profiting off of what I made, I knew that reinvesting the money would soon be worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an Artist/Beatmaker/Audio Engineer/Entrepreneur. I specialize in making custom beats for clients in any genre of music, with my mixing and mastering services, and providing creatives with tips on how to market their music, improve their skills and go about the business the right way. I would say I’m known for my unique beats, creative and quality mixing skills, and overall just being a fun person to make music with. I’m very down-to-earth and a great listener when it comes to working with artists on projects. If there is something in the recording that doesn’t sound right, I’ll let them know my opinion but also respect their decisions as an artist, also if the artist seems as if they are doubting the outcome of the song, I am good for keeping them focused and helping them get a better understanding of the potential I hear in their recordings. I am most proud of the amount of work I have done since I first started a couple of years ago and how many people my services have helped to believe that they can achieve a successful music career. What sets me apart from others is my work ethic and ultimately my passion for creating music. I strongly believe that even if I didn’t make music my career, I would still enjoy just creating music for fun whether it’s my own music or helping someone else with a project. Although the money comes with the business, I strive to work on ways to ensure that my clients are satisfied with the services I provide and help them to understand that they have someone they can reach out to whether it’s about an upcoming project, events, or even just to have someone to talk to.
