Rising Stars: Meet Tabitha Nelson of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Nelson.

Hi Tabitha, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started being interested in photography way back in elementary school! I was always taking pictures and loved looking back on the memories. I was the one out of all of my friends that always had a camera with me. Fast forward to 2015 I was pursuing a hobby and wanted something that would push me creatively and challenge me. I began taking pictures of my food as I cooked new recipes and after doing this I realized I could really turn this into something! I then purchased a website and domain and starting a food blog. After I mastered camera settings, composition and editing, I really began to enjoy what this little hobby of mine was, and how it was helping me creatively. It wasn’t soon after that I started thinking about expanding photography into taking portraits of people, just as I did back in school. I asked several friends and coworkers if I could take their photos and I practiced and practiced. After a few years I officially went into business, researching how to improve this, how to improve that, and was on my own discovery! I am happy to say that I have a successful family and newborn photography business, built with a lot of hard work!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle as I started being a family photographer was truly learning how to shoot. I couldn’t figure out why my photos didn’t look like the photos I’d see online. But I really had to lean into a lot of education and practice to lead me where I am today. I also found that doing daily and monthly photography challenges were really helpful to help me hone in on my skills.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a family and newborn photographer and I specialize in lifestyle photography. I am known for creating joyful and connected family photos. I definitely use my extrovert tendencies to connect with others so they can relax in front of my camera which in turns makes it easy to create meaningful photos of their family. Most families reach out to me when they want updated family photos, and you’d be surprised to hear how often I hear “we’ve never had professional photos done”. My goal is to give the gift of photography, and the memory for this family to have. I also get several inquiries for families that are expecting a new baby and they want newborn photos. I myself am always looking back at photos of my family and it’s such an honor when a family reaches out to me to do the same for them. I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I’m not after the “one perfect photo”. Of course I want families to love their photos and hang them on their walls, I also want them to love the experience and want to come back again and again. I strive to capture the family’s unique connection and relationship, in a way that is natural and isn’t forced and I want them to look back at photos and have a meaningful feeling. I also include a custom photo album in every session because family photos are meant to be printed and displayed!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I listen to many podcasts and find this is a good way to pass the time when I’m driving or finishing chores ha! I enjoy listening to podcasts relating to business, time management, business tips from small business owners that are also moms. I also enjoy following other creative entrepreneurs on their journey, whether their blog or podcast. I invest in education each year which helps me to be a better business owner and photographer.
