Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Scrivens.
Hi Tasha, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I live, breathe, and sleep weddings and events! It is my passion. But that’s not how my amazing journey started.
I lived and was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, by a mother who loved to bring people together and host the best house parties ever. I left Louisville in 1990 and I went off to college at Hampton University in Hampton Virginia (HBCU). After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, I joined Corporate America and worked in Information Technology for Lockheed Martin, followed by over 25 years at Warner Bros. Discovery (legacy Turner Broadcasting/WarnerMedia) in Atlanta, GA.
During my accelerating IT career, I became a wife and mother of triplets (yes, triplets!), followed by another baby, of which all four of them were under the age of two!
By having triplets plus one, I was able to fully use the gifts God granted me because I was able to gain some amazing experience planning lots of large birthday parties, christenings, holiday parties, and graduations, just from my kids!
I put my wedding planner dreams on ‘pause’ for a while to juggle my IT career, overwhelming demands of four kids, a divorce, depression, followed by a re-birth on life, a wonderful new husband and beautiful bonus daughter, and the reconnection with an adult daughter whom I gave up for adoption years ago when I was in high school. I experienced many trials in my life, but I never stopped smiling and continued to strive to be the best that I could be.
While at Warner Bros. Discovery, I was at a high point in my career as a Senior IT Director. I loved my job, but it was intense, as I was helping to launch HBO Max domestically and internationally. And in my limited ‘spare’ time, I spent late nights, early mornings, and weekends building my weddings and events planning business. I was doing what I loved in IT, and I also enjoyed my passion for weddings and events part-time, but I still didn’t feel whole and complete.
I prayed to God asking him to lead and guide me in the right direction. And I spend countless dinner-time hours talking to my husband about wanting to become a full-time entrepreneur as a Wedding Planner and Event Designer.
God granted me the courage and wisdom to step out on faith, and my husband gave me unconditional love and financial support, so I decided to leave my IT career and turn my true PASSION and PERFECTION into a full-time PROFIT.
I was nervous (still nervous), uncertain, and faced many challenges along the way, but I am so glad that I took a leap of faith to climb higher and challenge myself to show the world that I am one of the best, most organized, detail-oriented, and creative black Wedding Planners of the South!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
About 5 years ago, I was working extremely hard planning a wedding for a bride who took my kindness for weakness. I had an emotional meltdown because I was bending over backwards or her for a very minimal wedding fee, yet she was damaging my character. My husband, who has limited patience for pity, told me that if I wasn’t able to handle the negativity and obstacles that come with having a business, then I wasn’t ready for success. So, I prayed, went to sleep, and woke up the next day, READY FOR SUCCESS.
As a wedding and event planner, I have been through it all and seeing it all! I had a wedding where the groom decided not to show up, I had a client who said she couldn’t afford to pay me one day before the wedding, I had an event where the outdoor tent didn’t fit as planned, and I had a centerpiece catch on fire as guests were entering the event. You name it and I’ve experienced it.
Through all my struggles and panic attacks (lol), I would stop and say a quick prayer, then immediately execute a plan. As a result, I overcame all of my challenges and became stronger and even more ready to handle the next big obstacle thrown my way.
I didn’t realize it back then, but now I am so grateful for my obstacles and failures because those things have molded me to:
Expect the Best,
Plan for the Worst,
then I won’t be surprised by anything that comes in between.
