Rising Stars: Meet Temi Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Temi Johnson.

Hi Temi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I’ve always had a passion for music. I grew up listening to music and playing instruments at a young age so it has always been something I’ve had interest in. As years began to past and I grew older and went off to college in 2018. I started throwing college parties and exploring nightlife. I would always go to the DJ booth and just watch how the DJ operates, I was so amazed at how 1 person could control the energy in the room at parties and leave people with a memorable experience. I felt like that was my calling, so in June 2019 without no experience I took a leap of faith and bought a DJ set. Didn’t know what I was going to do with it right a way but that was the first step! I stayed up for so many long nights learning how to use the board, practicing with a experienced friend of mine and practicing everyday until I felt comfortable to go out in public.

September 28TH 2019, I got my first booking at a college bar! Although I was nervous I still managed to provide everyone with a lit night and since then it’s only been up. I started getting booked in Atlanta and working with top-notch promoters in the city and this honestly forced me to jump off the porch early and go crazy to better my craft because I wanted to make a good name for myself and they truly believed in me I couldn’t let them down! Before I started to rise, I set goals that I wanted to achieve and that was to DJ in a crowd of 1000+, tour different colleges, and become an artist official DJ… it’s safe to say I’ve reached all of those goals in a year in a half time span and this is only the beginning of something big in my life!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was hard for me in the beginning learning how to mix songs in perfectly and knowing what music to play. My nervousness was my biggest problem because I would focus more on trying not to mess up and have everything perfect when in reality all that did was hinder my true performance. Another big challenge for me was losing my board back in 2020, my car was broken in to one night after a gig and My board was stolen, this put me in a bad place because everything was starting to go good I was getting comfortable djing and also getting some good bookings so it really frustrated me I lost all motivation and just wanted to give up. Three months later I finally managed to save up and buy a board that was 3x better then my first one, so I just look at that kiss as a blessing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Club/Tour/Campus DJ, I’m known for throwing parties at Valdosta state and also Djing. One thing I am most proud of is my success and the little goals that I have achieved in such a little time frame, it only motivates me to go 20x harder! What sets me apart from others is my passion and work ethic for what I do, I truly put my all into what I want to achieve so that I can get to a high place in the music industry. I’m constantly thinking of ways to better myself everyday!

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to someone starting out would be to dream big! Start off small and expand yourself, network and take time to invest in your name and brand! Never limit yourself in anything you do because your life can change in a year. It’s going to be hard learning at first but hard work will always be your best friend when adversity comes!
