Today we’d like to introduce you to Teremis Boykin
Hi Teremis, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We started back in college with my podcast From Boyz to Men which is rank number 43 in coming of age podcasts. It’ touched on mental health and the different things we as men face on the daily that needed to be discussed. This was to act as a roadmap to the younger guys so they would learn from our mistakes so they wouldn’t make the same ones I did in life. Now we have just finished our first feature film that we will be showing in Pensacola on June 1st. It is called Hidden Intentions and it is focused on the main character Derrick who is struggling to decided between the different women in life to see which one is there for the right reasons. This was written and directed by me Teremis Boykin.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been many struggles along the way with family, self and the outside influences.
Dealing with many illnesses in my family in the last couple of years have really taken it toll on me. And finding a healthy balance with home life and set life. My grandma had been hospitalized numerous of times during the start of this journey due to her health issues. Last time she was hospitalized was while I was an assistant director on the project Southern Village which was written and directed by Elrico Tunstall and would leave from set to go up to the hospital to stay over night with her then get up after to head straight back to set the next morning. I was happy to say she made a full recovery and was sitting right by me at the premiere of the movie. I also lost two of my closest family last year. Their death was very hard for me to deal with being that they were the two men that I would go to and tell my dreams to and how I planned on making it to the top of the industry one day just for them not to be here when I start my ascend. Then with my kids trying to be everything they need me to be and do the things I need to for upcoming projects something conflict with schedules. I am chancing my dreams to inspire them to never give up on their dream no matter how old they get.
With self was getting over the doubt that creeps up in your head when things don’t happen how or when you expect it to. I have contemplated quitting numerous times but my stubborn ways wouldn’t let me do it and just had to put my trust in gods time for me. I had to take numerous breaks due to mental health and anxiety to refocus myself. Learn how to cope and deal with depression was hard for me at first but thanks to Veteran Affairs and my consoles I have been able to get the help I need to be the best version of myself for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer, actor, director and podcast host that use my life experience in everything I do. The scripts that I write tells stories about some of my life experiences combined together and show the struggles between the good and bad we have in all of us. This hopefully giving my character a realistic portrayal which the viewer can relate with how they react to the situations unfolding in the scenes.
And my podcast From Boyz to Men actually focuses on men’s mental health where we are the focus of conversation. It’s a safe place where we can come together as men a discuss the issues we are facing so we can be the men we want to be for ourselves first then our love ones second.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Trusting the vision that God gave you. I don’t let the people I tell my dreams to sway me away from what the vision is. Their always be people that have there expectations of what they believe you should be doing and have their own vision for you and your life. We have to remember it’s our life meaning that it’s our responsibility to make that vision or dream we have into a reality, if not us then who?
