Rising Stars: Meet Teresa Edwards

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Edwards.

Teresa Edwards

Hi Teresa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What’s my story? Now, that’s a loaded question… to say the least… lol. My story has quite a few pivotal moments where it began again.

Each of these restarts paved the way for my huge imagination, nurturing my passion for storytelling. Growing up as an only child, my escape was through watching television and going to the movies. I would imagine being in the movie or what I would do to make it better. Watching the behind-the-scenes clips was just as, if not more, entertaining than watching the movie.

Despite all the pivots—going into the military, getting married, having a child, and changing careers several times—my love for storytelling never waned. Today, I’m an author, playwright, writer of several movie shorts, actor, director, producer, and the list goes on. I’m currently shooting my first feature film. If it’s part of entertainment, I want to be part of it!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a Black woman raised in the South has presented countless challenges, and it’s disheartening that many of these challenges still persist in 2024. However, what truly matters is how we overcome these obstacles.

My strength comes from knowing that I stand on the shoulders of many Black women who came before me, who faced even greater adversities and persevered. Their resilience and determination paved the way for me, and in their honor, I strive to be the foundation and support for the Black women who will come after me.

By embracing this responsibility, I am committed to continuing the legacy of strength, courage, and perseverance.

Thanks. What else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a living testament to Chaka Khan’s iconic song, “I’m Every Woman.” I refuse to accept the notion that one must be confined to a single path. Instead, I believe that we should follow our hearts and pursue whatever passions ignite our souls.

For me, those passions are storytelling and being creative. The thrill of crafting narratives and watching them come to life is unparalleled. I truly believe that our potential is limitless, and we should never be afraid to wear many hats and pursue diverse passions.

Here are some of the hats I wear:

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Who deserves the credit? Initially, I thought of just a few names, but then I realized the list kept growing and growing. I began reflecting on all the people I know personally and admire from afar who have influenced me.

Then, I concluded that everyone deserved credit, from those who have mentored and supported me directly to those whose actions and achievements were observed from afar. Each played a part in shaping our journey. Even those who may not have been supportive offer valuable lessons.

But immediately… of course, my daughter, husband, granddaughter, blood family, Terror Dome Family, and friends.
