Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivian Dong.
Hi Vivian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Vivian Dong, and I am Chinese. Now I am a senior student at SCAD, majoring in fashion design. I am an optimistic designer with a girly romantic design style, and I am planning my personal brand. My hobbies include painting, calligraphy, and making doll clothes. My mother also studied art, so I’ve been influenced by her artistic environment since I was a child. I remember admiring Vera Wang’s wedding gown design as a child and fantasizing about becoming a fashion designer someday. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, watching movies and music, as well as reading fashion magazines and watching fashion variety shows. To be an excellent designer, in my opinion, one must continue to learn, travel, broaden one’s knowledge, see the world, and appreciate different cultures and knowledge in order to create better.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I also had a lot of difficulties becoming a designer because many people have prejudices against artists. However, learning fashion design necessitates a wide range of skills that must be honed over time. Every day, the never-ending projects and homework make me wonder if I chose the wrong major. Not only must the aesthetic be constantly improved and kept current, but painting, pattern-making, and sewing skills must also be improved. Simultaneously, they should continue to learn digital media, Adobe PS AI Indesign, and how to operate and manage their own personal websites and accounts. There’s a lot to learn when it comes to launching your own personal brand or studio. Being a good designer is not an easy task. Every time I design and make beautiful clothes and receive everyone’s approval, I feel as if I have harvested the feeling of the entire world, and I believe that all of my efforts have been worthwhile; this is the allure of learning fashion design.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve been working on my graduation project recently because I’ll be graduating in the summer of 2023. So now I have five dresses to finish and try to get on the school runway, which will mark the end of my college career. In my opinion, the design style of my works is more girlish and romantic. In the future, my own studio or brand will also evolve in this direction. I’m happy with both my design and production skills. I am a person who excels at execution. I am very efficient when I am working hard. Every designer is unique. I, like everyone else, have a distinct design aesthetic and style.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is a metaphysical concept. People’s lives are full of both good and bad luck. I believe it is critical to have a positive attitude toward luck and not let it slow you down. If I become my own designer brand in the future, I may be fortunate enough to attract a lot of attention and see my clothing sales skyrocket. Because of this, I will not feel arrogant but will work harder to learn, accumulate, design, and produce more and better works and designs. Of course, if I’m unlucky, the product never receives recognition or attention. I will also adjust my thinking, continue to learn, work hard, and insist on creating my own designs and works. Don’t let luck or temporary success or failure slow you down.
