Today we’d like to introduce you to Wally Sparks.
Hi Wally, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a two decade plus veteran DJ. I was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN however, Atlanta has been my home base since 2011. I started DJing during my freshman year of college in 1997. I toured the world and performed multiple national TV appearances with acclaimed recording artist Big K.R.I.T. I also produced a number of high quality DJ based events across Atlanta since 2016 and continue to do so currently.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When you have done something for the length of time that I have there are definitely peaks and valleys. In one of the late Nipsey Hussle’s interviews he spoke of going through “every emotion” along his journey. That is something that I relate to directly. I’ve had major wins and colossal losses. I’ve gained friends and family, I’ve lost friends family. I’ve behaved in ways that were unbecoming of the standard in which I hold myself to. I’ve also tried to help people who’ve requested it from me as best I could. I say that to say, no it has not been a smooth road. But, those are the best roads to take in my opinion. It builds character. Even with all the obstacles I’ve had to move past I have had an enormous amount of love shown to me that I am grateful for and I wouldn’t change a thing about the way my life and career has played out.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In addition to his work as a touring DJ, Wally is the creator and curator of Twankle & Glisten, a high-energy, DJ-driven dance party that celebrates the legacy of Southern hip-hop and R&B. Debuting in 2024, the event has become a must-attend experience, featuring world-renowned DJs and nostalgic music selections that transport audiences to the golden era of Southern rap. With its success, Twankle & Glisten is expanding into new markets and formats, making waves as a premier nightlife brand.
Wally’s expertise extends into the studio, having contributed scratching and turntablism to recordings by Big K.R.I.T., Spree Wilson, and The Foreign Exchange. Most recently, his work can be heard on “The Grey”, a 2024 single by The Foreign Exchange, celebrating the group’s 20th anniversary. His deep musical knowledge and technical skill continue to shape the sound and culture of contemporary hip-hop and R&B.
With over a decade of mixshow experience, Wally Sparks has also made his mark on terrestrial and satellite radio, spinning for platforms such as Hip Hop Nation (Sirius XM), WJTT, WBFA, WRVZ, and WKPO.
Recently, Wally expanded his role as a cultural educator, teaching a DJ masterclass, participating in a Q&A session on life as a professional DJ and the history of Southern rap at Colgate University alongside Dr. Aaron Dial and performing a DJ set of classic Southern rap.. His passion for music extends beyond performance, as he continues to educate and inspire future generations of DJs, artists, and music lovers
What were you like growing up?
I am an only child. I had a fantastic childhood. Although my parents divorced when I was very young they both played a significant role in my upbringing. Personality wise I’d say was a hybrid extrovert/introvert as I was very shy when meeting new people but making new friends as a kid was something I loved to do. As far as interests goes for me they are the same as they’ve always been: music, baseball and pro wrestling. I’m a big nerd about all 3 of those things!
