Rising Stars: Meet Whitney Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Mitchell.

Hi Whitney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Long story tolerable, I started djing almost three years after being a full-time hair stylist for the past 12 years. I was involved in a minor car accident that changed my life and the way I lived forever. My car accident left me with a shattered arm, and after therapy and self rehabilitation, I was unable to do hair at all. During the healing process, music was the only thing that helped me push through life. Once I was able to resume back to normalcy, I began drumming for therapy at the house and not much later at a local bar alongside my friend who is a DJ. I then became curious on how to dj myself. So, I asked questions, get lessons, bought a controller and the rest is history.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a DJ in a male dominating world definitely has not been the smoothest road, but I wouldn’t change my journey one bit. I found out a lot about myself, good and indifferent. I have also gained so much patience and independency with all of the obstacles that come my way. From learning how to read crowds at all sorts of venues, like clubs, bars, festivals, birthdays, the list goes on. It started off intimidating because I found myself at times getting booked at really famous venues and following in the footsteps of some very talented DJs. So it forced me to practice, take criticism, and even less pay. I’m grateful for the challenges. It has for sure helped create the person I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to call myself the Janet of all trades, but to narrow the down, I am a DJ, entertainer, and creative. I have experience in hosting and djing parties, from backyard graduations, corporate parties, virtual parties, you name it, I’ve done it. I am also a percussionist, hairstylist and have done a multitude of things as one.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in good or bad luck, but much rather, blessings and karma. However, to answer this question, I believe how I treat others in my personal life and business life plays a very big part in my life and career. From helping fellow DJ professionals by giving advice, encouragement, and connections, It has allowed me to meet and call on those, when I may need the same. I feel that establishing healthy work relationships can and will help anyone in the long run. I can definitely be a living testimony.
