Today we’d like to introduce you to Xinyi(Alice) Liu.
Hi Xinyi(Alice), we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was a child, my mom sent me to learn everything. But one of my favorite fields was art. I drew a lot at school or after class by myself. Many art teachers said I am very talented which gave me a lot of confidence to continue learning art. The very first inspiration for my art journey was two Taiwanese bands Mayday and Sodagreen. They have different art styles and very strong personal styles, especially Qingfeng Wu, the vocal of Sodagreen. He connected his lyrics to Chinese Traditional Culture and liked to use handwriting to create the key vision of Sodagreen’s album. In this way, I begin to find a way that creates my handwriting style and began to create illustrations. As time goes by, I grew up creating different artworks which include illustrations with diverse art materials, oil paintings, printmaking, collages, and multi-media..etc.
Since grade 10, I’ve been developing my drawing skills from paper to digital. At this time, I already have a strong personal style and began to make some money by selling my artwork. After I graduated from high school, I had several interns in Shanghai and Shenzhen which help me to explore more ways of creating fine art /design and made me know more about the whole industry in China. These treasured experiences let me realize that I should be more than a girl who only creates illustrations with personal style. So I decided to choose Graphic design as my major and began to finish my work with different software. I went through a lot of challenges and I pushed myself to learn many new things. But I am so proud of myself that I finished many great projects and I have things that can put in my portfolio after all.
I am so lucky to have had these experiences and met so many great, talented, professional people to help me in some ways. And I want to say thank you to myself for not giving up early and hard working.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I used to create all my artwork by drawing on paper or iPad. But I decided to become not only an illustrator but also a graphic designer. So I learned my software and skills by myself. And I have to explore different art styles rather than limited myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
After I graduated from high school, I got a great opportunity to intern at SMG(Shanghai Media Group). I worked with an amazing team. Our goal for that summer was to create a musical comedy show for an artist. And I was in charge of the visuals for this project. I completed a series of illustrations based on the artist’s personal background and story. It was finally made into a book and other products to be sold as merchandise. For the next few years, I was responsible for the graphic design of some musicals in China. The work included posters, online promotions for social media, photo shoots, illustrations, and merchandise. At the same time, I also made posters for different bands and screen graphics design for live houses. And I also participate in the execution of live shows. Up to this time, most of the works were still created based on illustrations. The turning point for me to broaden my work style was when I returned to Shenzhen from Shanghai and got the opportunity to intern at Tencent. I faced many challenges and grew a lot in this new environment. Tencent has a complete design specification, and I had to work according to the design specification and try to make new things that can show the creative. What makes me unique is that I can combine my personal strengths and my illustrations with professional official design. In this way, all the artworks will become more creative.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
– It’s convenient. Very tolerant of artistic diversity. – There are many slopes.
