Rising Stars: Meet Yang Qian of Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yang Qian

Hi Yang, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I majored in Financial Management when I was in my university. After I got my Bachelor Degree of Management, I was very troubled about what to do in the future. Whenever I felt confused and couldn’t think about anything, I always picked up my pen and started to draw on paper like I did when I was a kid. Then it occurred to me that since drawing is something that I have held on to since I was a child, maybe I can try to learn it in depth and make it my future career. Although I have not studied drawing systematically, it is my only habit that I have persisted in since childhood. Creating therapeutic illustrations for children and adults has been my long thought because I was lifted up from the dark episode of life by my favorite illustration series.
I tried hard that summer and finally came to SCAD, became a student and also an illustrator. I have no regrets about what I’m doing now because I’m doing what I love every day, constantly learning and improving my professional skills.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Compared to my classmates, I lacked the professional skills that they had accumulated for a long time. Before I came to SCAD, I even had some difficulty in completing a drawing to my satisfaction. I needed to break away from my conventional way of thinking and find inspirations from my surroundings that could inspire me.
Luckily, my passion for drawing has always motivated me to keep learning, and I have gradually learnt more from my surroundings. Now I am more comfortable and proud of my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am very interested in children’s books. I have been learning and creating them since I started to study in illustration.
When I was a child, I loved picture books. My parents selected and purchased many picture books for me to keep on my bookshelf. When I was younger, my parents would read me stories by my bedside. When I got older, I would pick up a book at random and read it under the covers until midnight. Some of the stories were funny, some of them touched my heart. Even if I can’t remember the plot of the story, the illustrations are still deep in my mind. I’ve always tried to draw something that would touch and warm people, something that they will remember. With this idea and passion, I keep learning and trying to achieve my dream.
I like to find inspirations from my surroundings, and my cat that has been with me for many years always appears in my pictures. I have a strong imagination, I blend everything I see around me with my wild ideas, and the warmth that naturally comes out of the images is what makes them special.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That must be that I studied financial management in college and didn’t have much exposure to professional painting training. And in real life, most people’s first impression of me might be that I look a bit cold, while my works are full of cute little animals and funny images.
