Rising Stars: Meet Yung J

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yung J.

Hi Yung J, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I knew rapping was my destiny at only nine years old. By 15, I was writing rhymes in between classes. But it was in 2014 when I got my foot in the door. That summer, I performed at an event and ended up in The Daily News the very next day. Since then, I’ve been on an upward climb. I’ve had some setbacks along the way. A car accident and the possibility of not being able to walk anymore. But I healed, started walking again and got right back to chasing my destiny.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a long uphill climb. And I’m still climbing. It hasn’t been easy. Confidence for one. When I first started, I was so shy. I’d be in the studio quiet as a mouse, observing and soaking everything up. Over time I’ve learned to be confident. I also used to doubt myself. It wasn’t until I surrounded myself with people who believed in that I saw my potential and how far I can really go.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an award-winning hip-hop artist, producer, actor and entrepreneur. What sets me apart from others is that I have my own blueprint. Notice how some artists come into the game emulating a major label artist. And then there’s others who make their own path. I’d like to think as myself as a trailblazer in my own right. The thing that I’m proud of is the fact I remained grounded and stayed true to myself. It’s so easy to get sidetracked and lose sight of who you are in this game.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Hip-Hop is always evolving. So I have no doubt that it will evolve in 5-10 years. As for trends, I tend to make my own. I’m something of a trendsetter. Some of the trends that’s out right now varies from very hilarious to uncalled for. Time will tell.
