Today we’d like to introduce you to Zayne Freshley.
Zayne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I was always surrounded by music, whether it was singing in choir, taking piano lessons, or playing French Horn in band. Throughout middle and high school, I used to write little songs but I never thought of actually recording or releasing my songs until I saw and heard some of my friends do it. I used to think that you needed to have big fancy equipment to make good music, but my friends were doing it from their room. So in the Winter of 2019, I bought my first mic and started recording in my college dorm room. I still record in my room, but since then, I’ve invested in a better mic and a laptop. From my latest album “IT’S ZAYNE” back to my first single “I Don’t Need You”, you can really see the growth in production and writing.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As far as creating music, there hasn’t been many hiccups. Most of the obstacles stem from people trying to take advantage of you. You know, claiming to provide services just to take your money. Navigation through all of the scammers has been tough, especially with me not having a solid team behind me. Even with these little obstacles, I’ve still been able to meet some great people who have helped get to where I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve always had a love for art and anything with a deeper meaning, and I incorporate this into my music. My music is, and will always be, a reflection of how I feel, how I have felt, and how I want to feel. My first two albums are meant to be antithetical. My first album is named “Remnant” because at the time, I was feeling hollow. I felt like a ghost floating through life just going through the motions. “Remnant” touched on my depression, heartbreak, and heartaches o had been going through. With my second album “IT’S ZAYNE”, I wanted to make a statement, not only to the world but to myself that this is who I am and this is what I stand for. While “Remnant” focused more on my pain, I wanted “IT’S ZAYNE” to exude my confidence. My music is a way to express myself and present myself to the world. The more of myself that I’m able to share in my music, the better it will be.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Honestly, I’m still trying to figure out what success in this venture looks like for me. Right now, it’s enough knowing that I’m being authentic to myself and that people are accepting that. I definitely want to be able to share my art with more people and for those people to see a bit of themselves in my art. I think my definition of success is malleable and will continue to change as I grow as an artist and a person.
