Story & Lesson Highlights with Sonia Thomas of Brookhaven

Sonia Thomas shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Sonia, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
As my eyes open, I thank God for allowing me to step on mother Earth and being in good health. I grab my phone to make sure I have not missed any emergent messages/calls and then put it away immediately. As I brush my teeth and get ready in my workout clothes, I think about the day ahead and glance at my calendar. After that, I come downstairs to hydrate with a gallon of water and a blend of turmeric, salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar and chlorophyll drop. After that, I go to my workout room to begin grounding for 5 minutes on my GroundingWell mat and practice Ayurvedic breathing. After this, I complete my hip, feet, ankle and leg stretches before I being my 45 minute workout (either weight lifting MWF or plyometrics/calisthenics/barre/pilates on TThSS). After my workout, I prep breakfast for myself and kids and then go to shower and get ready and come do my daily ritual of prayer. I then go up to wake the children and help get them ready!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a full tenured professor at a pharmacy school where I teach oncology, personalized medicine and complementary and alternative medicine. I also practice oncology at a local outpatient cancer center at a hospital. I also serve as an integrative nutrition health coach for an integrative medicine clinic virtually to provide coaching services. I do quite a bit of networking through conferences, events and presentations that I am either invited to give or attend. My coaching services are unique because I focus on the person as a whole and longevity and cancer prevention is something I am always considering that makes me unique from other coaches.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I think a huge part of my perfectionist, type A personality served a really good purpose for many years, but releasing it has served me well. Every part of a personality has good and bad to it. Being type A with perfectionism is what got me through school and build discipline for health and other purposes. However, I have let most of that go now as perfectionism is a waste of time and ultimately does not impact the result. If it’s something that truly brings you joy and provides comfort, then it’s never a waste of time.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Success can’t ever happen without failure. If you don’t fail and learn what the issues are or what shapes what you’ve become, then you can’t ever truly appreciate it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Growth. Committing to myself to become a better version of me and learning from past mistakes. Life is truly a journey and there is a purpose for every single encounter you have with anything. I am not someone who will ever be stagnant.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
That everyone is going through something and the way someone reacts to something really has nothing to do with you, but rather themselves.
