Today we’d like to introduce you to Yassie.
Yassie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Raised in Atlanta, I started singing with my mom in the choir at the age of eight. I began writing poetry around the age of 13 which later turned into songwriting. My mom passed away from a rare form of bone cancer at the age of 32 years old and I was just 13 when it happened. My mother died within a week of her finding out she had cancer, which took a major toll on my life. My mother was such an inspiration to my music and always had a positive word to say about anything I wanted to accomplish. Today when I perform, record or release new music, it’s always with a thought of how proud my mom would be of me. My new single release is the next phase of her my career, and I am very excited about it.
The single “Prove It” is a single off of my new EP titled “Care”. The EP is out right now on all musical platforms. “Prove It” started getting heavy requests from DJ’s and so it was only natural that it became the first single released off the EP. The video for “Prove It” was released on January 2nd, 2022 and the single has hit radio stations as well as global charts!
To give this project a heavy push, “Yassie” signed with MNS Media Group, a Brand Specialist, Marketing Manager & Publicist group that has worked with some of the elite talents in the entertainment industry including Actor “Gregg Wayans”, Actress/Model “Summer Wayans” and Producer “Diedra Wayans” of The legendary Wayans Family, Basketball Wives LA star “Jackie Christie”, Bravo TV’s Millionaire Matchmaker “Robin Kassner”, “Briana L. Isaacs” (WEtv Growing Up Hip Hop), “Shatava Lindsey” & “Courtney Larisa” from OWN Network “Ready To Love” & Say Yes To The Dress, Curvy Chick Fitness & TLC’s Chilli presents the Body Challenge campaign, Kimberly Rivers Roberts HBO’s “Treme”, Legendary Female Dance/Rap Group Oaktown’s 357 and The First, Second & Third Female Hip Hop Honors Awards. Also, MNS Media Group has been featured in such diverse media outlets as Hip Hop Weekly (7x), Black Enterprise Magazine, Examiner.com, and a host of others.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have had my challenges, I did take a break from music while pregnant with my now four years old son back in 2018. I did not know if I’d ever pursue music after becoming a mom. Also being a single mother was difficult at times but it was also so rewarding and it gave me true meaning/purpose, I will always put my son before anything. My son taught me so much as a woman and molded me to be stronger and that I can overcome and push through anything. Once I was able to co-parent with his father more, I began to start recording and pursuing my passion again.
Recording with engineers who were rude or disrespectful was an obstacle I dealt with being a woman in this industry, I found some men in this industry don’t always respect your boundaries. I also struggled within Nashville (where I currently live) getting my music to be played by DJ’s or even getting shows. The support I gathered was from my home town Atlanta and other states by me choosing to branch out.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer/songwriter/actress/model/brand ambassador . I am known for creating R&B / Neo Soul / Trap Soul music, what sets me apart from others is the authentic sound and the stories I bring throughout my music. My music speaks to people in so many ways. I’m most proud of being a mother first, second, being a charting artist, third having billboards with my name on them, lastly for investing in myself and my music it has been a long but humbling road. I only see myself going up from here.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was always singing, always dancing around the house. I have always been very outgoing, friendly and very talkative, so I had many friends. I liked skating, playing in the band (I played the saxophone), swimming and I even did step team while in school.
