Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia and China Harris-Sykes.
Hi Asia and China, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We are two sisters who founded Allure Beautique in 2019. We were both born and raised in Newark, NJ. We always shared a passion for skincare. The foundation was set many years ago by our grandmother, who was a licensed Cosmetologist. She instilled basic skincare maintenance in us, which inspired our vision for the future.
Asia: In my younger adult years, I gained a greater fascination for enhancing natural beauty by treating my own skin and applying makeup. In 2019, I decided to pursue Esthetics to help others look great and to feel empowered just as I did. I graduated from Elaine Sterling Institute in Atlanta, GA in June 2020 and became a licensed Esthetician.
China: In my pre-teen years, I’ve always been amazed with the beauty of natural skin. In my early adult years, I struggled with the direction of my career. I got back in touch with my true passion-SKINCARE. In 2019, I began doing research on programs that taught skincare. My sister Asia told me about the Esthetics program at Elaine Sterling Institute in Atlanta, GA. I quickly toured the facility and instantly knew it was destined for me. I also graduated from Elaine Sterling Institute in June 2020.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for us. Maintaining a 9-5 job, going to school in Atlanta’s infamous rush hour traffic, and dealing with our own personal struggles have been so challenging! There is a lot to learn in this journey of entrepreneurship. Trial and error is our way of learning-from our marketing/promotion strategies to handling the back end of running a business.
We’ve been impressed with Allure Beautique, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our goal is to encourage and enhance natural beauty by integrating self-love and customized beauty regimens. We specialize in facials, brow & lash enhancements, body treatments, and handcrafted beauty products. From the moment you enter your treatment area, our focus is on your complete relaxation. Our services are a great way to take a step back from the bustle of everyday life. Come take a break with us. To be a person of color and pursuing your own business in itself is taking a risk. We’re born into a disadvantaged position in society where we have to work extra hard to break cycles. You have to be confident and have faith in yourself and higher power to have the courage to take risks.
