Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerardo Becerril.
Hi Gerardo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started working at 18, brought in by a family member in this business. Shifts are long in this industry of the nightlife, starting was the hardest I was working with almost really not seeing real money until my first year. I’m currently employed at the James room on the beltline.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was never smooth, I struggled in many ways! The hardest was opening a door in the nightlife. Very few people will teach the skills. Also being a Hispanic was always a label.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a barback. My job is to work behind the bartender to make sure they have they need to make the drinks, from stocking beer alcohol, ice, fruits and most importantly very clean section. What sets me apart is that I go above and beyond. My friendly personality makes every night better, I take care of the venue I work at like if it was mine, so everything has to be perfect, I’m proud to say that now it’s my time to help people and teach what I know.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me success is when I can smile at the end of every shift and I’m happy to go to work again!
