Today we’d like to introduce you to Amya Davis.
Hi Amya, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hey world! I’m Amyá, the owner and curator behind Soulful Organics, a plant-based grooming company, as well as the owner and Licensed Esthetician at Soulful Esthetics, a private Bohemian Glow Spa!
To be honest, I stumbled into being a business owner! I actually wanted no parts of running a business nor did I aspire to sell products and services. I’m naturally curly-headed, so my journey started with trying everything possible in the stores to make my hair do what it needed to do; look full, soft and frizz free. With several years of hunting and hoarding products, I started to be more invested in reading ingredient labels to understand what I liked, and didn’t like about what I put into my hair. That process quickly gravitated into skincare and body care products as well as beard care for the fellas.
Fast forward past several crashed websites from falling asleep on my laptop, past packages exploding from being inexperienced on proper packaging, to being in business successfully for the last three years and now being fully self-employed!
After the first year and a half of Soulful Organics, a lot of my local customers encouraged me with threats to take my talents to the spa world and start offering facials. Truthfully, I was still working a full time job, being a single mom and trying to figure out how to speed up my shipping process, so performing facials especially unlicensed was not an interest to me at all.
The entire 2019, every time I would get PTO from work, I would immediately have to use it to stay home and make, package, label, and ship orders. On March 13th, 2020, I left my corporate desk job and went full time which ended up being 3 days before the pandemic! I ended up enrolling into esthetics school, and thank you Lord, for allowing it to be virtual and only for 4 months, because I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it if I was forced to be in a classroom for 4-days a week for 6 plus hours.
Fast forwarding again through all the exams and virtual facials, the booking sites, standing firm with my prices and policies, Soulful Esthetics, a spa that exudes nothing short of an experience is coming up on its one year anniversary this August!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m a firm believer that without risk, there’s little to no reward. But I’m scary and hard-headed so my road to success will probably never be smooth, haha. There’s constant challenges in my business because I always want more! My mind is always going. How can I make a better impact with my customers? How can I make my client’s spa experience more special?
One of my challenges is finding a balance between both aspects of business, product and spa, along with finding time for personal growth & wellness while spending quality and meaningful time with my son. I work solo, mostly because I believe people don’t work as hard for someone else as they do for themselves, but also because I have a bad habit of spending almost every dime I earn and reinvesting it back into my businesses. So as much as hiring someone else, outside of me, is needed, it’s not quite a priority in my mind just yet when there’s so many other things I want to improve. So, as you see, knowing when to let go, and accept help is also a challenge, haha.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Although I started as a natural hair resource, I quickly turned into a skincare and beard grooming guru. The more I grow as a curator and Licensed Esthetician, I realize that people really struggle with self-love, self-care and just taking time out for themselves.
Most of my clients are women, hard workers, single moms, businesswomen… just bosses in life! And I realize we, cause I am included, do not take enough time for ourselves to let it all go. We carry the hustle from one appointment, job, daycare, etc to the next. We always manage to look good doing it all but behind the makeup and masks, the naked skin shows the on-the-go lifestyle.
I specialize in forcing you to relax, helping you find your self-worth during our 2-hour self-care sessions, and finding your glow at the end. The men aren’t excluded at all, some of the most hard-working individuals come to see me more than the ladies sometimes. I get to educate the fellas on quick and easy skin and beard routines while massaging products into their skin as they fall asleep. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoy helping others find their glow. Probably why I’m known as “Your Baes Favorite Estie” and the “Beard Whisperer.”
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to those interested in starting a business of any kind, do whatever it is with integrity, a positive attitude and take your behind to bed on time every night!
When you do things with integrity, being honest and true to yourself will take you places and introduce you to people social media “booked and busy” coaching classes could never!
Having P.M.A, positive mental attitude will always make you more relatable and valuable. And lastly, you can’t be present with others if you aren’t present with yourself. Take your butt to bed and get some good rest! The unfinished work and unread emails will be there when you wake up well-rested.
