Today we’d like to introduce you to Kappa Theta Epsilon Sorority, Inc.
Hi Kappa Theta, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Kappa Theta Epsilon is a social service sorority for Black lesbian women. The organization was founded as a safe space for lesbian professionals to network, form friendships, and find community.
Since its inception, Kappa Theta Epsilon has provided its members with service opportunities, encouraged entrepreneurship, and expanded to network of women across multiple states.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Though it hasn’t been a smooth road, it has been a labor of love and absolutely worth it. When you’re creating something new and innovative, there will always be challenges. The power is how we respond to – and grow beyond those challenges.
Kappa is incredibly proud of our membership, and how they have helped the organization navigate challenges.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Kappa Theta Epsilon is an organization focused on impact. Within the organization, our members challenges each other to reach new personal and professional heights. In the communities we serve, our sisters create award-winning service initiative that touch the lives of a wide variety of people.
We are most proud of our organization’s commitment to innovation through service. Chapters across the country follow our Five Program Targets:
Leadership Development, Educational Advancement, Economic Empowerment, Holistic Health and Wellness, and Social Impact and Policy Awareness to develop programming that speaks to the most pressing needs of their communities.
Though women’s health – particularly African American lesbian health – and LGBT youth support are the primary foci of our efforts, Kappa women never turn down a call to service.
To our members, Kappa offers a warm, welcoming community. Members celebrate together, encourage one another, and hold space for each other when facing hardships. That kind of community is empowering for women who, sometimes, aren’t given a chance to be heard.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has been most important to the success of our organization is the genuine love for people. That love extends first to our membership, and then to the community at large. It guides our efforts to help our sisters – and others.
