Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetria Demi Overton.
Hi Demetria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Demetria Overton but most call me Demi. I’m from Texas/Mississippi, sprinkled with New Orleans spices! Lol. I’m definitely a Southern Belle. A small-town girl with a city mind and determined to succeed. I have a Typical artist childhood story. You know, I always loved to sing, dance and play dress up. Always the center of entertainment for family and friends and always knew that once I got a chance, I was going to do something big and help other people. It took a while for me to get to where I am now but, through hard work, dedication and faith, here I am. Building slowly but surely! I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, back in 2006.
Being an entrepreneur and eager to level up, I felt like Georgia was somewhere where I can make a better life for myself and my children and that’s just what I did. As an artist, I use to my sell cds out of my car when I first got here. It’s was a great experience! I love to pitch myself so I made money, performed at venues and had fun networking. But working other low-paying jobs to support that and bills wasn’t working so I became a nurse. I learned that you have to something solid to keep you going when your chasing your destiny. It clearly worked because my most important goal was to own my own businesses. Now I do. Now, even though the healthcare field was very, very rewarding, deeply, I still wasn’t happy being on someone else’s clock, ya know? Then God opened a door. It was the door to beauty school! Along with the other certifications that I’ve gained, I now have a Master’s in Cosmetology. Now that right there, that opened up a whole new world for me! Once I became a licensed stylist that opened up many other doors. I now work on major movie sets as an IMBd accredited Hair and make-up artist as well as an Actress. I was even blessed to be able to lead my team at Empire Beauty School Northlake to a 1st place win in the 2018 Bronner Brothers Hair Show. Listen, I am so grateful and ready to encourage others! I even have a really nice upscale apparel line that’s coming along really well. All these jewels picked up along my life path lead me to where I am now. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely… Not! The road was bumpy and had a lot of curves! People wouldn’t stay in their lane and it took a long time for the red lights to change to green! The struggle of keeping funding was real, accepting the no’s was real, not having support from friends and family was very discouraging! But staying focused is where most of us fail. Making life-changing decisions alone is what we’re afraid of. But that’s where I excelled. I’m a strong believer in change with unimaginable faith so staying focused and adjusting to change was my only choice! A no for me means just that. It’s not for me ya know? Keep going! Now Even when I get discouraged I’m encouraged because I trust that, what’s for me is for me. So I keep my vibes high and chin up. No matter if I’m a one man team or if they said no or I just spent my last on rent. I have faith and stay focused! It’s only temporary, nothing stays the same. I am a testimony that when you do that and add a lot of faith in it, miracles happens. That’s how I stayed in my lane on that bumpy road but now it’s smoothing sailing!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My most important characteristic is my high spirt and the ability to communicate with others. It allows me to see the good no matter what’s going on. It’s all about the outcome. If I can control the energy around me, I can control where it goes and I can control the situation which in return, the outcome is always good! My high energy is contagious. Most won’t remember my name but they definitely remember my spirit.
