Exploring Life & Business with Katie Roberson and Jaclyn Maxwell of Sunshine Pediatric Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Roberson and Jaclyn Maxwell.

Katie and Jaclyn are the owners of Sunshine Pediatric Therapy, a home health pediatric therapy company serving the metro Atlanta area with physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to children of all abilities. The two have been friends since their carefree college days at the University of Georgia, where they fatefully met working at a medical billing company handling insurance claims. They both ended up following a similar course in their careers. and attended Georgia State University to obtain their Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees. After school, they both hit the ground running with passion and vigor, gaining experience and knowledge in a variety of physical therapy settings. In 2016, they joined forces in buying and rebranding Sunshine Pediatric Therapy from their friend and colleague Becky McCullough, who established Sunshine in 2005.

Together, the duo dove headfirst into all things pediatric therapy. They navigated the “joy” of working with insurance companies, including Georgia Medicaid, so families didn’t have to. They, with their team of 12 therapists, offer home-based services so families, particularly those who have children with chronic needs, don’t have to travel to and from a physical clinic, often paying parking fees and lugging siblings.

They are incredibly proud of the hard work put into letting Sunshine be a light for families and children of all walks (or wheels!) of life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting here wasn’t all sunshine and puppy dogs, though. During the five years of Katie and Jaclyn working hard to sustain, grow and improve Sunshine, both women lost their mothers; Jaclyn had a third baby; and the company headquarters moved location from Brookhaven to Atlanta. Not to mention the two kept their small business alive during a global pandemic. Beyond their personal struggles, both women learned to share responsibilities and ‘divide and conquer’ administrative tasks. We certainly could not do what we do without our amazing team of hand-picked pediatric therapists and our exceptional administrative staff, who are the heart and soul of Sunshine.

Jaclyn comments, “Communication between us is crucial. We are really proud of how well we work together and support one another. It would be really hard if we didn’t have a strong respect for one another.”

Katie adds “We like to keep an open mind with our families and how we run things so we can make things as tailored and meaningful as possible for our clients. At the end of the day, advocating for and helping kids is really what matters most to us.”

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Sunshine, we believe in providing excellent quality of care and customer service while making our therapy sessions feel like fun to our young clients. We really hope that any family that works with our therapists feels they are getting the attention, knowledge and tools needed to help their child grow to the best of their abilities.
