Hidden Gems: Meet Leigh Willis of Dr. Law’s Photolab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Willis.

Hi Leigh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always been interested in photography for as long as I can remember. It started way back with the Pinhole Camera’s we made in elementary school. We spent time in the darkroom developing with chemicals and everything. My late father was used photography in his anthropological fieldwork and also instilled in his love for photography.

Fast forward to my college years and I took a photography course and got right back into it. Photography has been something that has been a way for me to express myself artistically as my other artistic skills are limited. Once I relocated to Atlanta, I began to attend sci-fi/fantasy conventions and found myself with the urge to take photographs of attendees, those dressed up in costumes and honored guests. Soon my partners in the business Jeff Hall and Latoya Simmons, were attending as well and we began to plan individual, small and large group photoshoots. We have also been able to grow our photography practice into a multifaceted one. We have been able to photograph fashion shows, weddings, children’s birthday parties, engagement, graduation photos, maternity shoots and family photos.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges recently has been the Covid-19 Pandemic. As you can imagine, we have been impacted by the disruption of the events that Covid-19 has caused. In the last year, it’s been tough as most people do not have events due to safety concerns. We did not want to put ourselves and our families at risk by being exposed, so we put everything on hold. As vaccinations have been increasing in the last few months, things are beginning to get back to normal and we have resumed. One of the biggest challenges to us has been the notion that “if you have a nice camera, you will automatically take great photos.” Nothing can be further from the truth, a camera is like any other piece of technology; it’s only as good as its operator. There are a lot of things that go into making a great image, with most of them being human factors rather than technological ones.

We’ve been impressed with Dr. Law’s Photolab, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Dr. LAW’s Photolab, we provide photographic services that allow us to create images that our clients will treasure forever.
