Today we’d like to introduce you to Assata Mayo.

Hi Assata, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for hair started as a child. My aunt taught me how to braid at the age of 15 years old. While attending college at Southern University, I began to do more Locs ‘Dreadlocks,’ than braids. I decided to turn my passion into my career. In 2014, I created my business Irie Minds in Louisiana. I was Thee Loctician in Jeanerette. I built a clientele and rented a booth at MacNificent Cuts.

In 2015, I relocated my business to Atlanta. I knew that Atlanta had more opportunities for my son and I. Since my move to Atlanta, I have built a clientele of over 700 clients. I am the owner of Rich Locs The Shop located in the historic West End. We are a full-service Loc Salon and Barbershop. A one stop shop! Family, Hard work, Dedication, Sacrifice, and Perseverance got me to where I am today. The support from my family is what drives me. I am happy that I can provide a space for stylists like me who are starting over. I provide mentoring to teens and anyone who is interested in starting a career as a stylist.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. We just make it look easy. I have faced many challenges becoming the business owner I am today. Struggles along the way were marketing, location, and business funding. I am conquering and crossing out each challenge in my business. I changed my mindset on how I thought about the challenges we were facing. I eliminated certain words from more vocabulary. I BELIEVE SO IT WILL BE SO. When we are able to tap into the power of our minds, all struggles disappear.

We’ve been impressed with Rich Locs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My brand is Rich Locs. I am a master Loctician of over 15 years. I specialize in Starter Locs, Loc Maintenance, Loc Extensions, and Loc Repair. I am known for my beautiful Starter Loc Sets and Loc Extensions. I am proud of my brand because it puts me in front of the world. I have clients that have traveled as far as Afghanistan for my work. To see people go to those extents lets me know that I am doing great work. I am starting to love being flew to different locations to offer services. I am able to offer services in places I could only imagine visiting. The name of my salon is Rich Locs The Shop. Located at 577-B Joseph E Lowery Blvd. SW Atlanta, GA 30310. At Rich Locs the Shop we are a full-service Loc Salon and Barbershop.

We have 3 Locticians and 2 Barbers available to serve you. Loc Education classes are taught twice a month. We have the option of 1 on 1 classes or group classes. Monthly apprenticeships are available as well. Walk-ins are always welcomed. Rich Locs The Shop is known for providing Atlanta with top-tier services. When you step into Rich Locs The Shop, you will be treated with love. Rich Locs The Shop is a place of peace. Being honest stylists and barbers sets us apart from others. We hear stories all the time from customers about stylists who just want the money. We are stylists and barbers who care about the health of our client’s hair. Our motto at Rich Locs The Shop is “Healthy Hair Over Pretty Hair.’ We are opened seven days a week. Come see us to give your Hair a Rich Touch.

What are your plans for the future?
One of my biggest plans for the future, is to turn Rich Locs The Shop into a franchise. Rich Locs The Shop is a family-owned business. We plan to open more Loc Salons and Barbershops across the country. We are currently working on our 2nd location. We are also relaunching our Rich Naturals product line. Our Rich Naturals products are Rich Naturals Hydration Cocktail Oils and Rich Naturals Rich Mist. Rich Naturals Products are lightweight and keep your hair nice and hydrated. Our clients are seeing MAJOR results. Products can be found on our website www.richlocs.com. I am looking forward to seeing my business grow big! I know that the limit is beyond the sky. The world will know about Rich Locs The Shop that started in Jeanerette, LA now thriving in Atlanta, GA.
