Inspiring Conversations with Octavia Conner of Say Yes To Profits

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Conner.

Hi Octavia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am Octavia Conner, CEO of Say Yes To Profits. I am a virtual CFO for consultants who desire to become fiscally responsible and cross the million-dollar mark in business. I am a mother of 4, an avid reader, and a wife.

My entrepreneur journey began after climbing the corporate ladder to become the CFO of a multimillion-dollar pharmaceutical company. During that exact time, I reached a place of unhappiness in my career, and my sister was expanding her business and needed someone to assist with bookkeeping.

Therefore, I began working for her as a part-time bookkeeper. I immediately felt a surge of excitement as I started to help her build the financial infrastructure of her growing business. The satisfaction of assisting her in experiencing financial freedom due to the strategies I developed was life-changing. I believe this was when I was bit by the entrepreneur bug.

I begin praying for insight into leaving a ten-year corporate accounting career to build my dream business instead. I also began attending networking events with the expectation of signing new clients. After some time, these networking events led to securing additional clients and speaking opportunities. At this time in my life, I found myself enjoying my part-time business and not my full-time career.

During my lunch breaks, I would meet with a client. Immediately after work, I would meet with a client or attend an event. Sometimes during work, I would meet with a client. There were even times where I wouldn’t go to work to operate in my growing business. I became increasingly frustrated with my career position because I felt as if it now interfered with my growing business. I felt as if I had arrived at a crossroads.

Then one beautiful Sunday morning at church, I received my answer. Yes, it’s time to jump into the world of entrepreneurship! Within one week, I left my corporate accounting career. With a laptop, a busted printer, nominal savings, but full of passion, I embarked on a journey of providing businesses with financial management support, strategies, and solutions. This passion led to the birth of Say Yes To Profits, a virtual CFO firm that helps consulting firms become fiscally responsible so that they cross the million-dollar mark sooner than they think.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Within 12 months of leaving my corporate career, I begin experiencing several challenges. When I left my job, I did not have the right mindset, a plan, or enough money. I found myself unable to pay my bills for a home I had custom-built two years before. The idea of losing something I worked extremely hard to achieve with devastating.

My business began to suffer because I couldn’t invest money into the growth of the company. Plus, I wasn’t operating the business as a CEO should. This led to sleepless nights and many days of feeling unsure if we were going to make it. The excitement I felt only 12 short months ago was starting to feel like a nightmare.

However, my story does not end there. I had to take a step back to take five steps forward. I returned to corporate America part-time and worked by business part-time. During a time that I looked like a failure, I had to reposition my mindset and money. I begin to study successful business owners, take entrepreneurial courses, and save, save, save! After building substantial savings, I entered the world of full-time entrepreneurship again, and as they say, the rest is history.

As of today, Say Yes To Profits has helped over 90% of our clients grow between 30% and 350% within 12-months and save over 60% on their taxes.
