Inspiring Conversations with Shamika Battle-Packer of Just Heal Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamika Battle-Packer.

Shamika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been in the mental health field for over 15 years and have devoted my time to providing counseling to help others heal. I began working in community agencies and then slowly began venturing out on my own. The more I worked with people individually, I found many similar characteristics such as many people struggling with anxiety, depression, and managing emotions. I found that working from a holistic perspective has been most helpful. Particularly, when my mom transitioned from this life in 2008, I began to look at healing differently. I realized healing is not just about eating right and exercising, but its also about having a spiritual foundation or set of beliefs, as well as mental clarity (how you think and feel about yourself). This prompted me to go on a healing journey, addressing healing from a mind, body and spirit perspective, which inevitably I incorporate into my clinical practice.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Building a business and a brand comes with a lot of learning opportunities. I have learned how to be a better leader, manager and supervisor. I’ve even learned marketing tips and tricks. The most challenging along the way has been wearing the many different hats, balancing all of the roles, and taking care of myself. You know, “practice what you preach.” I’ve learned the quiet dance of putting myself first while still being able to be there for others.

We’ve been impressed with Just Heal Counseling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Just Heal Counseling offers counseling services to women, children and families. Our motto is “Don’t deal, just Heal.” We offer a holistic approach to counseling, addressing the mind, body and spirit. Our sessions are non-traditional and offer a variety of services from meditation in session to even yoga poses, sound healing and much more. Just Heal offers weekly yoga classes for all to join (via zoom). I also offer clinical supervision for aspiring therapist where I teach them more about the therapeutic healing process, particularly the process I created at Just Heal Counseling. Bibliotherapy is also offered for children. Being a therapist and an author has prompted me to create books for kids helping them heal through difficult situations such as grief and bullying. “I am not your average counselor” is what I often tell people.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When growing up, my mom and I would take road trips to Houston, Texas. We would ride with the windows down and “name the clouds.” We would look up and name animals, shapes and whatever we saw in the clouds. We creatively made up stories and names for all of the clouds we saw.
