Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Crain.
Hi Jake, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Coached college football for nine years, five at the D1 level. I came back for Christmas break in 2019 and in January 2020, I started messing around and dropping some sports podcasts for fun. I got such a good response early that I decided to try it as a career and, within two months, was ranked number one in the country on Apple for Sports News.
Fast forward 11 months later and I have one of the top-ranked sports podcasts in the country and got brought to Atlanta by Vince Thompson (Founder of Melt Sports) and Steve Chamberlain (former division head at Turner Broadcasting) and now do our show 6-days a week out of a great studio. We are averaging over 450k downloads monthly, am on 26 different radio stations and am currently in talks with major players about signing deals with us. We cover SEC sports mostly but in a non-political and from a coach’s point of view.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a grind and our timing was perfect. I started out with an old microphone and an Acer laptop that barely worked. I have put out over 400 episodes in that time, so while the grind has been tough, it has been worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a content creator and am known for my coaching ability and the ability to take complex sports problems and communicate them successfully to the average fan. I am most proud of building something from nothing and now being able to watch it blossom to the big stage right in front of my eyes!
I think what sets me apart is my grooming into the game and ability to talk in-depth about multiple sports, my schematic analysis and my authenticity. Every episode I am myself, not faking it or anything.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
When adversity hits, you either take it or make it. A lot of people used the pandemic as a way to not work, it fueled me to work harder.
