Meet Jannine Deraney of Sweet Dreams Nurse Anesthesia in Alpharetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jannine Deraney.

Jannine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Our anesthesia company was founded by three certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAS), who graduated from anesthesia school together including myself. Our trio was ambitious and insightful for a better future as anesthesia providers. Upon graduation, the founding partners began the journey as independent sole providers at a rural hospital in South GA, sharing the anesthesia roles and rotating weeks to provide full time, around-the-clock anesthesia coverage. Within that year, the hospital was faced with financial difficulty and approached the group for a possible solution. In turn, our anesthesia team saw an opportunity to support the hospital in a more cost-effective way. We asked ourselves, how can we be a contribution to the facility in helping them thrive and flourish? Providing the hospital with an independent anesthesia service gave them financial stability and allowed the CRNAs autonomy in decision making and experience.

This was the beginning key concept in developing the anesthesia model we whole heartedly believe in today. Sweet Dreams Nurse Anesthesia (SDNA) name was then created with the intention of patients having a positive, safe anesthesia experience in mind.

Shortly after, we were given another opportunity to provide a fee-for-service anesthesia contract, outside of the central Georgia area, thus expanding our services into South Georgia. An orthopedic center was in need of anesthesia and our group was the top choice for anesthesia services based upon our proficiency in blocks and exceptional skills. To this day, we are honored to have the continued partnership with these first two facilities and have been recognized by Outpatient Surgery Magazine© as the Best in Nerve Block Proficiency.

Our company is blessed to have 12 partners, all of which are CRNAs, who share the same goals, missions, and visions, making our company what it is today. We also extend oneness to our lead CRNAs to assist in growth and development of our company. These valuable team members aid in the decision making process and expansion of our services. Our group has a shared vision of bringing together exceptional nurse anesthetists who convey passion and who take pride in a company where they have the freedom to give the best of themselves.

Has it been a smooth road?
Like any other business, we have been subject to the ebbs and flows of what is occurring in the communities we serve. When the Affordable Health Care Act first enrolled, we began to see a decrease in reimbursements from insurance companies. Even though we were faced with a few challenges, our company continuously thrived and maintained stability. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of expanding and creating partnerships with others that share the same vision, hard work, and unity. As we grow, we continue to stand for integrity and transparency. Our mission is to be a culture of excellence, quality, and proactiveness.

Our company has 12 years of experience in providing safe, well-organized and cost-effective anesthesia services to hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), and office-based practices. From the original hospital anesthesia contract in rural Georgia, we have expanded to a total of 8 states including Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. We continue to receive calls for anesthesia services expanding our stamp plate throughout the United States, evidenced by our steady growth. Starting with only the “idea” of an anesthesia company to the thriving industry leader where we are today, we employ over 100 CRNAs and provide anesthesia to over 75 facilities. In our organization, we pride ourselves on our ability to use the traditional anesthesia practice model where nurse anesthetists collaborate with surgeons to provide the best anesthesia care possible. Our anesthetists are always willing to go above and beyond to meet the needs of our centers by traveling to distant locations and being available at extended hours including weekends. We have been truly blessed to have such a great group of anesthetists that are caring, compassionate, and hardworking. The expression “it takes a village” depicts our company in a nutshell. Our partners are true pioneers in the field of anesthesia. We employ a diverse group of clinicians, teachers, students, veterans, and working moms/ dads. SDNA is constantly inspired by the unwavering commitment and expertise of our team.

Sweet Dreams Nurse Anesthesia has been on the forefront of innovative technology by providing solutions to minimize the risk of narcotics (opioids) in surgery. Having proficiency in nerve blocks has allowed us to transform the patient experience from one of pain control to having little to no pain. Our CRNAs are specially trained to administer nerve blocks that can provide pain relief up to 3 days postoperatively. This allows us to offer high-quality anesthesia care that extends well beyond the standard of CRNA practice. Possessing these unique set of skills set us apart from other CRNA groups.
