Today we’d like to introduce you to Kid Kamikaze.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I had always been involved in musical environments since I was a kid, but I didn’t start rapping until I was in high school. I got into rapping originally cause I was skateboarding and some of the homies I would skate with had started rapping. I was always interested in rapping, though cause I used to write poems and spoken word. When I graduated high school, I had moved to Saint Petersburg, Florida, to find myself cause I knew college wasn’t for me, so I just dived straight into life. When I was in Florida, separated from all my friends I grew up with, I got to really lock in with myself and that’s when I realized being an artist was my true passion in life. I’ve done a lot to get to where I’m at right now. I had moved back to my hometown in Atlanta in the Sandy Springs/Buckhead area and made a decision to put my side of town on the map. A lot of our great artists come from the Eastside, Southside, and the Westside, so I want to be the first great artist to ever come from the Northside zone 2 and claim it.
When I got back home, I took all my money I had saved up when I was in Florida and bought studio equipment and started learning how to engineer music. Even to this day, I still record and mix about 90% of my music myself. I’ve only been in professional studios a few times in my career. When I turned 20, I had my first kid and not gonna lie it really lit a fire under my ass. That was when I had to decide if I was gonna take the “Normal” route in life or follow my dreams relentlessly no matter the consequences. Obviously, since we’re doing this editorial, I chose the latter half lol. I’ve literally done everything for my career since I decided to take it seriously. I’ve never had a manager. No label contract offers. Nothing. Everyone that knows me or knows of me is because of me. I’ve put together and booked most of my own shows using the resources available to me. I do my own marketing campaigns, I built my brand myself, I do my own publishing, I write, record, engineer, and even produce myself every now and then as well as funding everything myself. I even own my own company, now KRASHKAMI LLC, as well as having my own app coming out soon that I developed myself. I’ve honestly turned into quite the little entrepreneur in the process of following my dreams to perform in the big leagues with the greats. Now at this point, I can say another goal of mine is to push music into the future a little more with my ties that I now have to the VR world and 3D printing. I want to also help other artists nurture their business instincts as well cause it’s a tricky game we play being a part of the music industry and there’s always a cap or a con waiting around the corner to get whatever they can out of you, especially for all my rappers coming out of Atlanta.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Far from smooth lol. It’s expensive to be an artist. Your drip gotta be on point. Good quality music videos cost hella bread. In the rap section of the music industry, you have to worry about your life every time you go out because you never know who might have beef with who and next thing you know events are getting shot up and you might just get shot at because of your affiliation to certain people. The lifestyle costs hella bread. As an artist, everyone gets a piece out of your pocket before you even get to look in it. Not to mention the strain it puts on your personal relationships. To be anywhere near successful in this industry, it takes a godly amount of tunnel vision and focus. As a father, I can tell you that having a music career is even more tedious and meticulous than raising a child. I’ve lost a lot of relationships romantically and friendly because of the workaholic lifestyle I’ve developed on this path. lol I’m so far gone down this road that there’s no point in stopping at all, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I knew what I signed up for when I decided to follow my dreams instead of be “normal.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the core, I’m a recording and performing artist but I do wear many hats at this point. I’m a word smith. I know exactly how and what to say on every track presented to me with no limitations to genre and I Hit my mark every time consistently. I guess at this point what I’m most proud of is my versatility and ability to genre bend as well as how quickly I can record a quality song. I think what sets me apart is my versatility as well as my ability to see things from a business perspective as well.
What makes you happy?
Making great records and being able to perform them for the people that enjoy them. It really feels like I’m living in my life purpose and there is no greater feeling.
