Today we’d like to introduce you to Michiah White.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Photography has been for the longest one of two ways for me to express myself, the other being music. I’d say my interest in it started when my family started a subscription to National Geographic magazine. I was always captivated by its amazing photos and the stories they told. Once I got my first camera, a small paltry 3 megapixel Kodak, I started taking photos almost everyday. Even though most of the pictures I took back then were pretty mediocre or flat out terrible, I remember how much fun it was as well as therapeutic. Once I upgraded to a more serious camera, I started exploring my surroundings more and taught myself about photography basics and techniques. Originally I had no plans to make a business out of it but as time progressed, more and more people started asking me to shoot them and so I obliged. But for a fee of course. It started generally with mostly personal photoshoots but then I started working clubs, shooting different events, weddings and more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is rarely ever a smooth road in life and I was no exception. I often struggled with dedicating more time to my craft. Throughout most of my professional life, I worked at a place I found unfulfilling. Though it definitely had its benefits, I would often feel drained upon finishing a day’s work to the point I was usually too tired to do what I really wanted. My philosophy on life is to do what you want but do it fully and consistently. Our time here is short and to waste it doing something you don’t enjoy is wasteful.
Please tell us about Michiah White Photography.
As of late, my photography has been mostly studio work. Studio photography is relatively new to me so I’ve been refining my techniques during the fall and winter season. I’ve really been into a lot of moody and dramatic shots but I also like to experiment with color as well. I much prefer shooting outside though. It allows me personally to be a bit more creative. Outside of personal photoshoots, I also shoot special events, live performances and clubs as well. I especially love shooting high energy clubs and live performances. Some of the photos can be very surprising and exciting if you time your shots right with the ambient lights and strobes. It also encourages me to look for shots at odd angles and perspectives that most people wouldn’t notice.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
As I grow up, I often find myself reminiscing on the simpler times me and my brothers spent together. It’s not so much a singular memory I am most fond of but rather our times together. We would spend hours outside racing each other on our bikes or playing basketball. Afterwards, we’d come in, play video games and watch old VHS tapes all the while ripping each other on any little silly thing we could think of. I will always hold those memories close.
