Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Hernandez.
Sonya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As long as I remember I’ve been in love with all things related to healthy hair and beauty. I remember my grandmother always wore many beautiful wigs as well as styled her own natural hair beautifully. My fascination with the power of how a new hairstyle could transform a woman’s persona was then realized. At a young age I recognized that a woman’s hair style could make her stand a little taller and her gaze soften. I began experimenting with my friends and family members hair. Each person that sat in my seat lended me their trust and confidence… allowing me to create and add to a new version of themselves. For most women…our crown is a very personal and powerful expression, and at times a very sensitive topic for those who don’t understand its beautiful complexities. Motivated by these things my journey to educate myself on all things related to healthier hair began. From understanding the make up of all hair types, to how proper hair health can be maintained and restored. In 1998 I entered cosmetology school with the drive and excitement to share in the fascinating world of hair! In Cosmetology school I quickly excelled to the top of my class as the top consecutive running stylist during my professional training. While still in Cosmetology school I was given the opportunity to work alongside Celebrity platform artists at popular hair shows hosted in Chicago, Florida and Alabama. This fueled my passion and desire to create and maintain beauty with any head of hair that I touched. After Working in different salons alongside some of the very best sought after stylists in the area, I absorbed it all and grew from each experience. However I always noticed one thing was missing. There are so many different textures of hair and products, some may work for one person and not the other. Therefore my back bar was always loaded with several different products for the variety of hair types. I always knew the power of a professional hair care product will reinforce the results of your work as a stylist and the hair health of your clients.
After sometime had passed I was given the opportunity to share my craft and care from behind the chair in a clinical setting. I connected with a company by the name of Womens Healthcare Image in Sacramento ca. Here my journey began to open up further. My main role here is focusing on helping those experiencing hair-loss due to medical treatment, thinning hair, alopecia… etc. Over the many years I’ve always had a fascination in the health of the scalp and how to properly restore hair. February 2020 Gro~Me™️ Natural hair growth products were born! This is my personal gift to all women to help them after they’ve left the styling seat to continue to have the power to maintain, grow and nurture healthy hair. One line for all women, and textures. Gro~Me™️ is safe, natural and effective. From the shampooing process to the conditioning, following up with a leave-in hair treatment. No matter if my client wears a wig, or a weave, or her own natural hair, I wanted every women with all textures to have the control in their hands to have healthier hair. I finally feel a sense of fulfillment in what I originally set out to do… help women to love and appreciate the crown they wear for a lifetime.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Without the many hills and mountains to climb, I would not be here, value myself or the seat I have created for myself today. My challenges along the way we’re related to being doubted by well meaning individuals regarding my career choice in the hair industry. Rather than get discouraged… I allowed this to drive me to be the best version for myself as a licensed cosmetologist. Ive learned that what matters most is what you think of yourself, not others opinions! Everything is possible with hard work, focus, and sacrifice.
Recent challenges I’ve experienced were related to receiving opportunities and pressure from other directions to conform into a box others built for me according to their needs and their dreams. In these instances Ive learned to respectfully let my voice be heard and clearly define my motives. I must admit another challenge for me has been conquering the fear to fly solo! Sometimes you must travel your own path alone and this can be frightening! But in some cases to properly honor and fulfill your goals it is a necessity to be able to go further. The very idea of launching my own haircare line was daunting and intimidating. Many times I thought… Is it wise to invest in this? Will all my hard work pay off? Should I just stay behind the chair? Is the timing right? Rather than giving into doubt or fear I choose the unknown and gave it my all. When I failed… I was determined to get back up. When the doors I knocked on didn’t respond.. I kept trying new doors. The opportunity came in a moment when I least expected it and my dream was given life. My product line launched in the heart of the CoVid-19 crisis and I didn’t allow even that to stop me! In the end I must say perseverance, staying steady, and positive has all payed off!
Sometimes a persons fear can be actually succeeding … at times I admit I’ve held myself back and did not value my own worth. Throughout this journey I’ve learned that no matter what you keep getting back up, no matter what you keep sowing seed diligently even though it looks impossible. See every opportunity the big, and the small as a stepping stone. Grow from the good and learn from the bad! You can learn so much from each role you receive in life and I truly believe it prepares you for the road ahead.
Nothing worthwhile in this life is ever easy but gratitude keeps you grounded and true success comes from a motive of helping others.

Recovery Wig Solutions is a e-commerce company based in Sacramento, Ca.
I provide a variety of name brand wigs, head wraps ,custom made wigs and the newly launched Gro~Me™️ Natural hair growth products. In addition to the online store, I also work in a office space where I offer consultations to help with the selection of wigs and hair care guidance. I assist and educate my clients with the skills they need to succeed. Additional services provided at this location are wig customization, hairloss help and wig refurbishing. Those that are experiencing hair-loss due to medical treatment and are contemplating wearing a wig, are invited to be consulted in my private office space. These clients depending on their health plan and diagnosis may be eligible to receive reimbursement for their wig purchase through their health insurance plan.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memories involved me writing short stories reenacting them with my friends. I would really get lost in those stories. I also enjoyed traveling on vacation as a family.
