Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney “Coco” Outland.
Hi Courtney “Coco”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
So, I’m the Fairy Godmuva of Lippies, Ms. Coco born and raised in Houston but shares space here in Atlanta. I created the brand from an interest I’ve always had with the beauty industry at the end of 2019 right before the pandemic. Envisioning my interest in lipsticks growing into a full lip brand was exciting therefore making my overall mission to bring dull lips to life more of a commitment than a task. I not only wanted my consumers to look great, but I wanted them to feel good also. Thus began my process of saving a chapped lip or two, I couldn’t have my girls suffering from CLS (Crusty Lip Syndrome).
From the beginning, it’s been essential for me to supply lip products that didn’t contain irritating ingredients but could still provide daily moisture and retain hydration without compromising the quality of the products. I continued building the colour selections and three years later, Colour Coded by Coco is still succeeding in delivering such a product and keeping my commitment to my consumers. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started this venture however, I’m where I am today because of word of mouth which has been and still is the best marketing strategy. I’m old school.
As I frequently say, don’t be scared to kiss & tell, tell a friend to tell a friend.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road? Oh, baby no. Nothing but bumps, twists, and turns along this ride. I didn’t come from a business background and no one was prepared for a global pandemic so this journey has been trial and error. I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows since the beginning which has kept me on my toes. Imagine creating a brand that supplies lipstick then BAM! Everyone has to cover up almost their entire face with a mask. We went from business casual to sleepytime chic within a matter of seconds. Luckily for me though, my colourful beauty community was choosing to show up to zoom meetings and virtual happy hours with a look, it made me proud. The bare minimum was cute but a popping lip colour was fierce,
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Aside from being the Fairy Godmuva of lippies at Colour Coded by Coco, I’m the hostess with the most Senior Hospitality Coordinator at an eminent law firm. My commitment to providing great customer service in both industries I serve is what sets me and my brand apart from others. You can’t supply a great product then compromise on the service offered.
When asked what am I most proud of, I would have to say I’m proud of all the small wins that continue to turn into big wins for my brand. Receiving recognition in certain publications alongside some pretty heavy hitters in the beauty industry is exciting.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’ll tell you what surprises me instead…when people who meet me for the first time can’t believe how down to earth I am. I get a chuckle when people assume I’m one way then surprise! I’m your new best friend lol. I’m full of personality and very animated. When I do the pop-up markets, that allows me the opportunity to personally connect with people on a level that social platforms do not. There’s nothing quite like that human interaction to spotlight your personality and I genuinely enjoy meeting new people.
