Today we’d like to introduce you to Jené Marie.
Jené Marie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Heyyy! I’m Jené Marie, a professional dancer, actor, and all-around evolving content creator! My passion for dance started right when I came out the womb. When I was younger, I would always stand right in front of the TV and watch my favorite childhood show, The backyardigans. Every time their theme song came on, I would follow along and mimic their dance moves. My mom placed me in my first dance class at the age of six. I then advanced to the competition team at the age of eight.
During my two years of competing, I won the titles Petite Ms. Dance of the Bluegrass and ranked top 10 in Dance Masters of America! I loved the excitement instilled in winning a trophy but started to realize I felt “stagnant.” I asked my mom at the age of ten to move to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue my professional career in the entertainment industry. My mom has and will always be my biggest supporter, so after I attended my first hiphop convention, she had realized I was really passionate about my decision. We made the move from our home town Louisville, Kentucky to Atlanta, Georgia, on December 27, 2015. Ever since then, I’ve been blessed with many unforgettable experiences and opportunities of a lifetime. I’ve been able to grace the stage with some of the most legendary artist such as Missy Elliott, Ciara, Normani and many more. I went on my first tour at the age of ten called the “Lets Dance Tour.” My acting career also started at the age of ten, allowing me to be a part of Netflix’s Step Sisters, Tyra Banks Life-Size 2, P-Valley, and be a featured dancer in a few episodes of Step up the series on STARZ! I’m so grateful for each and every opportunity I’ve experienced and know I can only continue to elevate. 🙏🏾
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always had a positive outlook on my career. If there’s ever a “no” I never look at that as a “stopping” point but as a reason to go even harder. Staying consistent with any and everything I put my mind to has always allowed me to prosper in ways I could never imagine before. Also, surrounding myself with people who support me to the fullest, inspire me, and steer me in the right direction has always allowed my journey to be “seamless.” Nothing but learning and evolving every chance that I get.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional dancer, actor, and choreographer. I’m most proud of maintaining honor roll in my advanced classes at school while working so hard towards my goals in the entertainment world. There’s no limit to my creativity, mentally nor physically. I will always find a way to make my dreams and visions come true.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Everyone who I’ve meet in my lifetime has left a mark on me and my career. Family, friends, and the Atlanta dance community! Kiki Ely, Sakinah Lestage, Sean Bankhead, Jamaica Craft, Marc Marvelous, and Anthony Burrell, to name a few, have mentored and trained me to become the best me I could ever be. My technical training came from my hometown studio, Upstage Dance Centre, in Louisville, Kentucky.
