Rising Stars: Meet Rigney Dentson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rigney Dentson.

Rigney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I remember being as young as two when I fell in love with music. Unlike everyone, I didn’t view music as a hobby I saw it as a form of communication. My first words were rap lyrics according to my parents, my family would play music for everything we did, car rides, clean-ups, partying, getting ready for church, and playing games, especially at parties. This was one of the ways I connected to my father! He was always amazed when I rapped his favorite songs. My grandma (his mom) played a lot of blues and my mother’s mom jazz, making my music taste versatile. On several occasions when I was in the 3rd grade, when the teacher would step out, I would write raps with my friends and rap them out loud to the class. I realized that I was pretty good at it in the 5th grade when my teacher and classmates would always be quiet and pay attention anytime I performed, if you know how hard it is to get a bunch of 11-year-olds to be quiet then you know that was major! I attempted to start my rap carer at the age of 12 but after uploading 4 videos on youtube and not receiving the feedback that I expected I left it alone altogether. When I was in High School, I joined the band and fell even harder for music. Between marching band and performing symphonic during concert season, I was all in with the music.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth at all but it has all been worth it. In 6th grade, I lost my superhero and best friend, my dad. I lost a lot of friends, some to the grave and some we will never speak to again. I took a lot of Ls along the way to get here but learned from it all. As of recent, the biggest struggle I’ve had was doing this alone, the pro is I do it my way but it is hard just not impossible I always keep God first and keep going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would love to say that I am an artist but that is just half of my work. I am a songwriter, stylist, and as of recently, a business owner. I started off wanting to be an artist but I always knew it wouldn’t end there. Recently I started my own record label ‘Coolest On The Planet Ent, LLC.’ I am known for my creativity and my versatility which is also what I am proud of because it sets me apart, I cannot be boxed in! It is never black or white for me, I like gray!

How do you think about luck?
I don’t think I saw any luck, only blessings! Where I am and what I am doing is because of the steps I am taking, nothing was given, and everything was earned. I do know that it is a blessing to even be here, have a sane mind, and have the ability to do what I love so for that I am always grateful. Success always comes with persistence.
