Meet Graham Kuhn of Graham Kuhn Entertainment in Woodstock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Graham Kuhn.

Graham, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a classically-trained singer and was working in gyms as a personal trainer and was looking to somehow do music full time. I approached a friend who is a full-time musician and also a DJ. He told me that it was obviously very hard to quit a salary job and start working full-time as a musician. That’s why HE got into DJ’ing to supplement his income. So he trained me and got me started in the business in 2007. He even helped me purchase my first DJ rig.

I slowly built my business, honed my skills, continued to learn more about the business and now I am consistently voted one of the top Wedding DJ’s in Georgia by brides and grooms. Besides DJ’ing, I also offer my singing services for wedding ceremonies so it’s awesome being able to incorporate that into my business as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting your own business is never easy. It took me some time to understand how to market myself and to get my name out there so people could find me to hire me. The first couple of years I just went by word of mouth for gigs and, as you can imagine, that wasn’t the most effective approach. I had to advertise (aka pay $$$).

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Graham Kuhn Entertainment – what should we know?
My company is mainly focused on DJ’ing for weddings, but I do also provide live music (piano and singing) for wedding ceremonies and other events. What I am most proud of with my company are all of my positive reviews. I am proud that all of my clients are extremely pleased with the work that I do and that I helped to make their wedding day as awesome as it could possibly be. I like people to be happy, it’s that simple. I have a very strong track record with previous clients and that makes me very proud.

What sets me apart is my attention to the details and my accessibility. I care about making the event the best it can possibly be, I put myself in the bride’s shoes (well, not literally) and treat it as if it’s my own wedding. I really don’t think a lot of DJ’s do that. And as far as accessibility, I pride myself on returning phone calls and emails within 24 hours, if not within 1 hour most times. I know how stressful it is to plan a wedding and when your vendors don’t return calls to answer questions it just adds another level of stress.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I am genuine. People can feel that from our first discussion and that resonates with people. They know that I care about doing a good job and that their money is well spent.

Also, my ability to read a crowd and determine what type of music is working or not working at an event is critical. It’s a confidence level I must have to be able to say “this type of music is not working, we have to play this kind of music” and go with it. It was stressful when I first got into the business because I was never sure of my choices. It took time to develop that confidence.
