Conversations with the Inspiring DJ Sky Jetta

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Sky Jetta.

Detroit’s native “DJ SKY JETTA” is 23 years old and has been professionally DJing for 5-plus years. In 2014, Jetta moved to Chicago, IL to pursue her dreams of becoming one of the biggest “African American” woman high-end designers. However, throughout that process, Sky decided to drop out of Columbia College Chicago, Kanye’s former dropout school and began to take her DJing to a professional level.

With the love for music and having her father, a former DJ, inspire her career, Sky Jetta began to grow a passion for House music and wanted to produce her very own House and EDM. Throughout that journey, she spontaneously decided to move to Atlanta Georgia to further her DJ’ing career.

Along with her journey in Atlanta, many doors and opportunities opened up. This is where she’s done her first music festival (A3C) opening up for artists such as Trina, Lil Wayne and many more. She is currently traveling to do what she loves nationally, and plan to work internationally very soon.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a woman in the industry is challenging within itself. You’d have to prove your worth in your field, get used to being sexualized because of the way you look, and battle with getting paid timely/fairly.

Advice to any younger ladies pushing to work in the music industry or actually any industry; “remember to never go outside of yourself, stick up for what you believe in, and remember you are worth more than you could only imagine.”

Aside from the challenges of being a woman, it gets very hard being your own boss sometimes. Somedays, I get lost of what to do because my life is without much structure most of the time.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m currently a sound selector, slash “Disk Jockey”, a.k.a. “the life of the party.” I take my job very seriously and the most important thing for me to do is to make sure any partygoers who aren’t in their best mood leaves with a positive spirit. My sound as a DJ is “free.” I say free because I tend to play any genre or artist. During a Sky Jetta’s set, you’re bound to hear Travis Scott blended with your favorite Michael Jackson song.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
As a child, I grew up with a musically inclined father who schooled me with Jazz, Funk, Oldies, Hip-hop plus. I attended performing art schools throughout my entire childhood leading me to join the school’s choir, learn bass guitar, piano, drums, and play violin. I always knew I wanted to be involved with music for my future career, even as a little girl.
