Meet Phillip Smith of Smith Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in McDonough

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Smith.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Phillip. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have trained jiu-jitsu for the past 20 years. Jiu-jitsu was always something I was good at, and after the recession hit in 2008 I decided to find a way to supplement my income. In 2009, I started teaching jiu-jitsu lessons out of my garage in hopes of building an academy one day. I was successful, in fact, I moved the business from my garage to a small store front in 2010. The space was only 1,000 sq feet, with only 300 sq feet of mat space. However, I maximized the use of my space and took a unique approach towards my small business. I approached jiu-jitsu the same way that I approach life; Be courageous and set an example. For my academy, I wanted to create an environment that brings people together from all walks of life. I truly believe in the concept, that Jiu-jitsu is for everyone! Within 6 years, I transformed the small garage academy to a 4,500 sq ft facility with state of the art equipment in order to provide the best instruction for self-defense and competition. As my success has grown I remain humble and remember the sacrifices that I made to get to where I am today.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There were many struggles, we started our business within the largest recession since the Great Depression. I still maintain to this day my current profession as a school teacher. I jokingly tell my students I am a school teacher by day and Jiu-jitsu superhero by night. However, jiu-jitsu has become my therapy both physically and mentally. My biggest struggle today is finding that right balance within life from father, husband, teacher, jiu-jitsu instructor. I think I’m on the right track!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Smith Brazilian Jiu-jitsu – what should we know?
Smith Brazilian Jiu-jitsu provides quality instruction in the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I help people accomplish their goals and make better versions of themselves. I help children who are bullied. I help kids realize their true potential and give them the confidence to make the right lifestyle choices. What most students would say about is that I am known for my dedication and philosophy towards the jiu-jitsu lifestyle. The things that make me the most proud is to watch my students practice and see just how far they have come with their technique. What sets my academy apart from others is my ability to create an environment that is open to everyone. Because of the popularity of the sport of mixed martial arts, people may become intimidated because other academics thrive in an EGO driven culture. When you come to my academy, leave your Ego at the door!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
In my jiu-jitsu philosophy, I would state that two men (Jacare and Traven) have shaped my understanding of Jiu-jitsu. These are the coaches that trained me and both equally have a place in my history as to building who I am today in Jiu-jitsu. They are polar opposites now but they have had an influence on my training and teaching. In terms who I want to be when I grow up, I would probably venture to say, Roberto Traven, Because he looks good (Almost 50 yrs old)!!!! He still competes and is in impeccable shape!

In my business philosophy and the mentors that have given me guidance, I would like to give credit to Kenny Kim and Phillippe Gentry. I can always rely on them to motivate me and give me the guidance to make my business better. Anytime that I have a question, I can pick up the phone and they will always make time for me and help me on my journey.
