Today we’d like to introduce you to Darance Scoon.
Darance, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I attended Georgia State University and received a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. I’ve always had a strong interest in the art of salesmanship. After graduating, I worked for NBA TV at Turner Broadcasting for a year and soon left to pursue entrepreneurship. I started working part-time as a doorman for Four Seasons Hotel so I can have more flexibility with my schedule. Soon after getting acclimated to my new hours of operation I began to plan out how I would take advantage of my new availability. I then came up with the idea to form a clothing company called Atlantafornia which I eventually want to grow into a household brand that can sell more than just apparel. Once Atlantafornia became financially independent and no longer needed assistance from me or my partners, I then decided to go after a bigger stream of income.
This is when I enrolled into real estate courses in order to obtain my real estate license. Once I received my license, I decided to work for Keller Williams. This turned out to be one of my greatest career decisions because after learning how to do the job effectively I excelled rather quickly. I then used the money I made in real estate to obtain my Dealer’s License for automobiles. So now I have three income streams that are pretty reliable and help solidify me as a true Entrepreneur.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has been anything but smooth, to be honest. I would compare this journey to a rollercoaster. My reasoning for this is because there are so many highs and lows when trying to pursue entrepreneurship. Often it feels like you are just wasting money & time and should just give up and apply for a “9 to 5”. Other times you will see rewards for your efforts and it’s just enough to keep you motivated to continue. For example, when starting my Auto Brokerage, my partners and I spent over $20,000 before we started to see any returns on our investment. So let’s just say anyone who plans on taking the leap of faith to be self-employed should be prepared to take plenty of losses before they ever see a “W”. But when and if you survive all the losses the W’s will come and it will all be worth it.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Keller Williams, AutoMate Auto Brokers and Atlantafornia – what should we know?
