Today we’d like to introduce you to Keris Love.
Keris, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a singer- Songwriter, ghostwriter, and Activist from The Bronx, NY born an raised! I always knew I was an artist but didn’t understand what type until much later in life. It was definitely my high school music teacher who noticed my gift. I use to come to class, and before class started, I would play “name that tune” with my classmates. I would go to the piano and play songs I heard the night before on Funk Master Flex radio station, and have my classmates guess what I was playing. I didn’t own a piano or keyboard at home, which shocked my teacher. Even though now looking back I was probably being disruptive to the class. My music teacher instead encouraged me to take advanced music classes and told my mother and nana they needed to buy me a keyboard ASAP. It was then I learned I had an “ear for music.” From then on I continued writing and singing, even through college although my major was political science (where my activism started to grow). My story as an artist has collided with my activism once I realized I could use my art to tell the stories that are not being told. Which brings me where I am today, an “Artivist.”
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My writing as ghostwriter has been the bulk of my existence. My Artistry captures the human condition lyrically setting it in syncopation with the audience’s reflection, creating an environment that allows the Artist I’m writing for and the audience to be themselves and see themselves. I take time with getting to know who they are before providing a bodywork. I would hope the message people get from me as an artist and influencer is that I’m a movement, or should I say A product of a movement. The pieces I’m working on now I hope to send a message that embodies humility, love and procures the culture and experience of my people.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
It is extremely important that Artist link with one another because yes this life can be lonely. It doesn’t even matter what type of art people are into. My best friend is an Actor, writer, and director. She is who I call on when I’m feeling low. My advice would be to use your networking event and even social events to link with like-minded people. Also, create a village of folks who support you. Sometimes this doesn’t include family members. Look for people who are not trying to dim your light but are trying to help you shine it. NETWORK SIDEWAYS! We often think to network up hoping that someone who is on top will pull us up. It has been my experience that networking across is where you find humble, genuine people. You guys are all grinding and can be the support each other needs.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
They can follow me on Instagram @Kerislove or my Facebook page Keris Love’. I use both platforms for my music and my Activism.
