Meet Aquanetta Lane of Cake Attraction in South Fulton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aquanetta Lane.

Aquanetta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all began watching my mother bake brownies and cakes for my elementary school functions! All of my teachers would request my mom bake for the class parties. Eventually, mom got tired of baking and I began to take over! I started baking for class parties and it sparked an interest and it kept going. Although I would always bake, I couldn’t let go of my desire to be a doctor! I decided to attend college and obtain a BS in Biology. I was supposed to go to medical school and become a General Surgeon specializing in Oncology or become an OBGYN. The closer it got to graduating college, although I absolutely loved the idea of practicing medicine, it just didn’t seem like what I wanted to do forever, so I decided, I’m just going to do some type of research!

It was very challenging to find a job with simply a Bachelor’s, so I moved back home. I finally landed a job after moving home, but needed additional income and wanted to do something that could potentially turn into a business. I thought, hmm, let’s make a flyer offering cakes for Thanksgiving and Christmas and see how this goes. My very first offer had me up all night two nights in row baking cakes for Thanksgiving. This turned into people asking for cupcakes and cakes for birthday parties, church functions, business functions, and all other types of functions. I kept baking and saving little by little, purchasing various pieces of equipment and continuing to pursue something I wasn’t sure about.

To be honest, I kept asking myself what if this doesn’t work, what if I fail, what if they stop buying, what if, what if? Thankfully, I had the support of my parents, tons of family and friends, so I decided to turn this side hobby into a business! I did some research, saved some more money and paid to make Cake Attraction something real, with the ability to grow. I did an event called “Cakes, Shakes, and Entrepreneurship” two years ago to officially launch my business, and that was the beginning of what is currently growing today! I’m a business owner who still works a 9-5 and is making a mark by building clientele in her new location, Atlanta GA!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely has had it’s bumps and reconstruction periods. Finding time to balance a 9-5 and run a business can be challenging, yet motivating. Figuring out what works and what doesn’t work when you’re a self-taught baker can be stressful! Moving to a new location and basically having to start over is always scary, but having the tenacity and drive to make it happen is always worth it! Life will always happen, and sometimes at the most inopportune time, but that’s when you have to make the choice to weather the storm in spite of the odds and see the bigger picture you’re working towards.

Cake Attraction – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cake Attraction is a home-based sweets company! I specialize in cupcakes and cakes with unique flavors not just in the cake, but a flavorful icing to match! I’m known for the infamous “Dreamisicle” flavored cake/cupcake! It fuses a variety of tropical flavors for a bite of complete deliciousness! It was something new I tried at my company launch and it has been my #1 seller and inquiry since! I’m most proud that I have kept someone from giving up on their dreams and taking their own life by simply putting inspirational messages on my business cards!

For me, this company isn’t just about making money, it’s about impacting the lives of people and giving them some sort of hope! With the many things that happen in life, a simple message along with being kind can make a huge difference! The thing that sets me apart from others is simple; my why! I don’t do what I do just because I love to bake and I want to say I have a business. I do what I do because this will be the avenue that helps me to 100% fund the careers of many people who are less fortunate and need some type of assistance in making it all happen. Stay tuned for how this will happen!

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
If I can take my gift and use it to impact the life of someone else, then that’s my true definition of success! I believe that success isn’t merely defined by who made the magazine for richest person in America, or who has the largest chain of restaurants. I define success by who made an impact and helped someone to understand the value of why they are here and why life is worth living regardless of your current situation or your past history. While having a wonderful stream of income is extremely helpful in being influential, a simple message that provides some type of hope and sense of belonging goes far beyond money. If I can help be that influence, I will….giving hope and inspiration from a message on a cupcake and cake box one at a time!
