Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassandra Alexander-Green.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a Charleston, S.C, native that moved to Atlanta in 1990. I was a survivor of child sexual abuse, rape, and domestic violence. I took the pain of all those traumatic events and founded WOWW Ministries that focused on helping survivors of traumatic events. I started writing poetry as a little girl and then started writing plays to escape and express my own pain. Using my pain to help others through the arts was cathartic for them. I found that survivors of bullying, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and mental health issues told their stories well through the arts. Skits, spoken word, and dance work for those that were coming through or in abusive issues.
It worked for the very young and even seniors. Awareness months such as Mental Health Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness, Anti-Bullying, Sexual Abuse Awareness are my opportunity to inform and educate through entertainment… I work with several nonprofit organizations doing plays and even PSA’s. I have been a civil and human rights organizations like SCLC, Angie’s House and others. I have directed for ten years, the only lynching reenactment in the country, Moore’s Ford Bridge Lynching Reenactment.
It was recently in a documentary, Always In Season at Sundance Film Festival and won the Jury Award. The reenactment has been in Time Magazine, seen on NBC, DW German television, The Guardian, BBC, NPR, Radio Lab, Boston Globe, and several other news media outlets, I have spoken on Racial Reconciliation at several conferences. I am VP of production at BOP TV a network that features positive images of people of Color… I still work with state, federal and local prisons and jails. WOWW works with the Homeless community, feeds and clothes those in need and gives toys to needy family every year for over 20 years.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been homeless with my children when they were younger and lived in a hotel for ten months at one point, I was I an abusive marriage and was almost killed when I didn’t have a car I would walk sometimes 3 miles to get to jobs. I have faced serious health issues over the years and almost died more than once, but I have always continued to work at trying to better the lives of others in spite of my personal struggles. Two days before leaving to be on a panel at Sundance Film Festival my daughter’s car she had loaned me was hit by a hit and run driver. It was totaled, so Marta is my friend again. I am just grateful to be alive!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BOP TV Network and WOWW Ministries\Productions – what should we know?
WOWW Ministries and Productions works in the community to help educate and assist those in need of resources and advocacy help. As a civil and human rights activist, our main focus is victim advocacy and we are known to attend legislative sessions to make our voice known and heard. I am most proud of BOP because the network gives people of Color a chance to use their skills and get their projects on a network for the world to see. Actors, directors, producers, sound engineers, cameramen of Color have an opportunity to work their craft with pride. What sets BOP apart is that it is the largest Black-owned streaming network in the world. Michael Campbell is the CEO and Founder. WOWW is set apart because we work in the community with little outside funding, but our name is good in the community for doing what we say we will do.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I believe in a time when morality in this country is at an all-time low that integrity and trust is essential to my success.
