Conversations with the Inspiring Katie Crenshaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Crenshaw.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a mom of three in the Atlanta suburbs. I own and operate the blog: KatieCrenshaw.com, and I recently launched a podcast: If I’m Being Honest With Katie Crenshaw. I started my blog as a platform to share my perspective and to build community through subjects like motherhood, mental health, and body acceptance. In 2016, my open letter to critics of my daughter’s facial anomaly went viral worldwide, being featured in publications like People and Cosmopolitan. My podcast, which launched early this year, features candid conversations with people who have felt silenced or misunderstood in their journey in an effort to demystify and humanize them. I have recorded conversations discussing sensitive topics like being trans in the deep south, racism, grief, PTSD, alcoholism, sex work, and others.

I fully believe that my higher purpose is to connect people through vulnerability and human experience. In closing of my podcast every week, I say the same thing. “There are many things that define each of us, but at the core of our truth, we are all just honestly… human.” As someone who is no stranger to stigma, that sentence is something that motivates me every day to keep talking about things that are important. I grew up poor, I dropped out of school, experimented with drugs, and I married and divorced (a couple) too many times. I also spent my fair share of time struggling as a single mom. When I simplified my life and clarified my intentions, I landed on my purpose, true happiness, and success. I want to teach others how to do the same thing through their own story.

Has it been a smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth, but I will say that when you are in line with your purpose it comes a little more naturally. (It also makes work more fun when you love what you do and you’re building your own empire!) Everything I’ve learned is self-taught, which is inevitably the “slower” road- but is less expensive and so valuable. In the early days of blogging, I spent hours learning how to create a website, understand social media, and how to operate a business. I have networked until I’m blue in the face and I truly feel I’ve earned my success in this space.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Katie Crenshaw story. Tell us more about it.
I’m most proud of the lives my stories have touched and the connections I’ve made and community I’ve built through authentic storytelling.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
This is more so geared around entrepreneurship:

1. The sky is the limit. You can learn how to do anything on the internet. Find your truth and figure out how to monetize it.

2. Never stop networking. There is so much to be learned by simply being in the presence of other entrepreneurs. Always say yes to the coffee dates. You never know when you’re meeting someone who is integral to your journey.
