Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Clark and Mary Susan Buhner.
We officially met at a mutual friend’s birthday party, and we continued to run into each other after it. It seemed like the universe wanted us to be friends, so we did what all ladies do; we planned a lunch. At our first official lunch date, Amanda may have forgotten her wallet; however, she did manage to bring six lip-glosses in her leopard fanny pack.
By the end of the lunch, we had run the gamut of emotions. We laughed and cried and laughed some more. Before we knew it hours had passed. We shared a connection. We’ve both been through a lot; we both understand grief and loneliness and loss, but our mission in life is to choose happiness and love and authenticity.
Amanda started a blog, Cocktails & Chemo, when her husband, Joe was terminal with cancer to give family and friend’s updates and as a way to inspire other people going through cancer. After Joe’s passing, Amanda started The Cocktails & Chemo Foundation to help other young families dealing with this disease while trying to keep her promise to Joe to create a full and joyful life for she and her their young daughter Mira. The Cocktails and Chemo Foundation’s mission is to create a support network for the often forgotten caregivers of cancer patients by providing one-of-a-kind care packages.
Mary Susan had also started a blog after her middle daughter was born deaf and her youngest daughter was diagnosed with juvenile type one diabetes that left her dependent on an insulin pump. Feeling overwhelmed and stressed she looked for an online community of moms. Unable to find the community she was looking for in 2009, she created one – Mommy Magic. A community of moms who had a positive outlook on motherhood while offering affordable tips to make it more manageable and fun. A few years later she wrote a book based on her blog and began her on-air Mommy Magic TV Segment for the FOX affiliate in Indianapolis.
In January of 2019, Amanda and Mary Susan decided to launch The Hey Girl Podcast together. We decided to take life’s lemons and turn them into laughter. We are sharing our lives with our listeners as they unfold—marriage, raising kids, being single, the importance of healthy friendships, and most of all, self-love and care. The truth is, life it is not always pretty and we want women to know that it is not the setbacks, but the comebacks that matter. Our goal with The Hey Girl Podcast is to always be real and authentic. What you hear is 100% us. We push record and don’t stop until 30 minutes is up. We show up knowing that there is courage and truth in being our true selves. We want listeners to feel like they are in the studio with us and that they are not alone. We want to connect through laughter and most of all, we want to spread joy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are self-taught podcasters. To say our first time in a recording studio was chaos is an understatement. Luckily, it just added some extra laughter to the recording.
However, we are always learning! We are both busy moms and balancing it all can be crazy, but we just try to laugh our way through it!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Hey Girl Podcast – what should we know?
The Hey Girl Podcast is A Lifestyle Podcast that is on a mission to promote positivity while promoting the need for self-care and self-love among busy women.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We both have a background in television, but podcasting is a new space for us. We both have a lot to say, and this medium allows us to share our lives as they are unfolding with others. We laugh a lot both with and at each other. Our goal is to show up, be our true selves, and laugh a lot along the way. We will always be authentic. There is courage in being your true self and sharing that with others. That is what motivates us!
