Meet Trailblazer Brittany Godfrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Godfrey.

Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in high school, I ended up dating a guy that worked at a funeral home. I fell in love with the embalming aspect of the industry. I went to mortuary college right out of high school. After I graduated, I was hired on as a funeral apprentice for a funeral home preparation facility. It was a very fast paced location and I learned so much from my time there. Once I became a licensed funeral director, I moved on to work at other funeral homes and worked my way up to management.

A few friends of mine sent me a casting call looking for a real Mortician. I answered the call, was interviewed and hired on the spot to consult on the Netflix series, The Haunting of Hill House. After meeting with the director a couple of times, I was asked if I wanted to play a Mortician. I agreed and was able to act next to Elizabeth Reaser, who is such a talented woman! I was able to consult on so many aspects of the show and the feedback from other people in the funeral industry has been great! Playing “Andi”, Shirley’s funeral assistant, was so much fun! The whole experience was incredible. Mike Flanigan is so talented and cared so much about accuracy. He is a genius! The whole cast and crew were phenomenal. There were so many talented people on the show.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to being a woman in the funeral business did not start out great. After school, I applied to a lot of funeral homes and all of them told me they could hire me to answer the phones and “look pretty” for funerals but they did not allow women in the embalming room. To become a licensed funeral director and embalmer I had to do an apprenticeship, which meant I had to embalm. I ended up get a job at an equal opportunity employer. The company has been very good to me and allowed me to work along with many other amazing women.

Being a young woman in an industry with a lot of strong-minded men brought on rumors. Unfair accusations that could have destroyed my career. The whole experience has given me tougher skin and taught me to speak my mind, respectfully.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a location manager and a licensed funeral director and embalmer. I am known for my attention to detail and organization and I am very proud of my team. We are all in it for the same reason: to provide comfort and assistance on the worst day of someone’s life. My team and I are here to serve our families and to make this sad situation as easy as we can for our families. We do whatever we can for our families and love to think outside the box. Personalization is a wonderful way to celebrate the life of someone you love and we love to help families add that to their services.

Working as a consultant and actress was a great opportunity. I hope to find more work doing that. I love being about to show the world about the positive side of the death care industry.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I love Instagram. I get stuck down the rabbit hole of random memes and videos. My favorite podcasts are MyFavorite Murder”, “Serial”, “Casefile” and ”Last Podcast on the Left.”

I listen to books on Audible as well. Currently, I am finishing up “The Shining” so I can move on to “Dr. Sleep” and be ready for the “Dr. Sleep” movie.
