Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Kush.
Larry, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am Larry Kush, a 23-year-old entrepreneur from the nawfside of Atlanta. At around 14, my mother was going through a pretty bad relationship, and I was given the opportunity to live with my Dad in Flint, Michigan to get away from the drama she was dealing with. I have always been into poetry, but I didn’t feel like my Dad would really relate to how raw my feelings were in my writings. My Dad is super important to me; I always wanted us to have something to bond over, so I used this condenser mic, my boy, Jonathan Chica gave me to start recording my own music at 15 years old in my Granny’s guest bedroom. After a year and some change in Michigan, I came back to Atlanta and got into the music scene with artists Will Macfly (Doe Williamz), Jon Banks, Ace Mccain (Cain), and Illa Guapo (Rarerashad). We threw cyphers at our high schools and even ended up in a record deal together at some point. This caused my commitment to music in general. At around 18-19 years of age, I began rapping on my own more seriously. I had always been attached to this group I started with called O.E. I’ve thrown shows, performed at over 50 shows, and grossed almost 2 million views on Soundcloud alone. Because of my early start in the industry, I picked up many different skill sets that allowed me to plant myself in a lot of doors currently that are not open to most other people. I learned how to shoot music videos early watching my peers create content, and that has pretty much turned into a full-blown business for me. My business, Red Scale Mag, is something I’ve been working on for about a year now to back my brand as an artist and also to back the creatives in my community on the nawf side of Atlanta shooting affordable music videos.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create music first and foremost. Music is my first love, and I’m really good at it. My message has always been that you can do anything. When I started rapping there was no such thing as a “SoundCloud rapper.” Me and the homies just loved music, and it was pure because it wasn’t a fad. If you rapped, good for you let’s hear that sh*t, if you don’t, ok. I was really a pioneer for my community on how to do business with music AND share that knowledge with those around me. The best way to describe my music is diverse. I hear a beat, and if I like it, that’s my lane. You don’t know what’s about to happen, but it’s about to be fire.
My second love is videography; it’s really important because that’s my contribution to my music and my community’s growth. I’ve produced every single one of my own music videos with the help of Polomutt and a lot of Nawf side artists such as Lord Xan, TfuckingY, and Omari M’$ to name a few. I have my own unique look, that really empathizes the artist’s record instead of just throwing random effects at the visual.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
The best advice I can give on financial struggles is to learn as much as possible. Youtube is a resource that alot of creative people in general neglect. I learned everything I know from watching other talented people in the background. I couldn’t get anyone to show me the ropes, so I researched and studied those who were giving it out for free. The world does not acknowledge excuses.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can listen to my music and see my work at Redscalemag.com. I am also on all platforms like Apple Music and Spotify to name a couple. The biggest way to support my work if you are not an artist is to simply press play and tell somebody about the fire you just witnessed. Any creative can support me by just working with me; I’m pretty open to working with anyone that’s talented.
