Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerell Shearin.
Jerell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started off small, originally located in Decatur playing out of Green Pasture Baptist Church. We played basketball games on Saturdays, during the basketball season, we played in the league called the UMBL and UBA for pro and college basketball players. I launched community events like: back to school and breast cancer awareness. Our annual Back 2 School have given away thousands of backpacks and school supplies. A lot of the school supplies come from local sponsors and local business with individual people in the community. To bring awareness to my events we invited local up and coming acts to perform to bring attention to some of our community awareness causes. Some acts include Migos, Jahari, TK and Cash, Cool Americans, Eastside Boyz, Slim Calhoun, and several gospel groups. At our first event, we had State Representative Dewey McClain.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can not say its been smooth road, it is a lot of work which I am continuing to do and plenty of barriers in the path. My biggest struggle is an advertisement, location (GYMs equipped for basketball and events), and annual funding for marketing, I have been blessed to have dynamic people that I can depend on that we continue to lift each other up and grow.
Please tell us about Georgia Spartans.
I own and operate the Georgia Spartans a pro men’s basketball team. We specialize in great basketball and Community Initiatives. My team is known to play year around in charity games such as Atlanta Turkey Classic, Learn2 Live health expo, back to school events and cancer awareness events. My events have anywhere from 50 to 100 vendors an average of 400 people. My team is made of diverse unique players from all walks of life. I am most proud of my team because of our willingness to exceed the above the norm and strive to make our communities great. We focus on providing our communities with the knowledge, the tools and the people to succeed.
Fulton County is a strong contributor to all my ventures.
I appreciate all of their support and constant efforts to get better each year. Fulton County has a lot to offer in various mediums, having more public athletic venues would make Fulton County a stronger more sought out destination.
The proudest moment is the ability to bless the community in such a large way throughout the year. To be an honor to receive five proclamations for giving back to the community. I love the ability to network and be surrounded by so many minority business owners in one city. I dislike traffic and the transportation system in our city.
