Meet Asis Thapa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asis Thapa.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Where should I start? I was born in Bhutan, which is a small country in the Himalayan mountains. It is such a culturally rich country that still has a monarch. I moved a lot since I was a kid, so I was exposed to all types of different settings and cultures that I feel like I take it for granted sometimes. I am the youngest of four sons, so I guess I was somewhat spoiled but also teased a lot. My brothers definitely had a big influence on my life. My oldest brother, Ruel, exposed me to a lot of stuff growing up like the Back Street Boys and Eminem to Afrojack and DJ Blend. My second oldest brother, Joel, is one of the most talented musicians I have ever met. Man, that guys inspire me. He showed me, my favorite band, ever, The Red Hot Chili Peppers. I teared up when I saw them at Bonnaroo 2017. He was the first one to show me FL studios; it used to be called Fruity Loops back then. That’s what I use, FL Studios, to make some crazy stuff. My third oldest brother, Navin, is someone I look up to genuinely and has a big impact on my life. We used to break dance in high school, and he used to always get me out of trouble. I use to want to be a dancer when I was younger, so making dance music was not that far off, I guess. I feel like there’s much more to my story, but I think those are probably the most important things.

Please tell us about your art.
I make music, period. I make all different kinds of genres from lofi, hip-hop, dubstep, house, and a whole bunch of shit. As of now, though, I love making EDM stuff, more so dubstep/riddim, because of the crazy sound designs. I love doing sound design stuff cause it gives my songs or sounds its own unique dynamics that makes me, me. And I feel like thats part of what being an artist is. It’s very personal and intimate. But at the end of the day, I just want people to enjoy what they’re listening to. I use FL Studios as my DAW, digital audio workstation, to compose all my songs. My favorite synthesizer right now is Xfer Serum. I first started on Native Instruments Massive.

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
It’s definitely lonely when you don’t have anyone to talk to about your art. I went through it for a good while until I found people. I’m lucky that some of the people I talk to now are close friends of mine. There are so many groups on social media like Facebook and Instagram that you can join, which I definitely recommend. I also recommend just putting your stuff out there for people to see. You never know cause someone might just reach out to you.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Catch me on SoundCloud under the name Funky Warrior, where I post mostly the heavy and dance stuff. I also have another page under the name A Bag Of Flavors, where I post the less aggressive and melodic stuff. You can follow me on Instagram @funky_warrior. I’m also a part of a group artists called G-Wubz. We throw parties and showcase what we got every few months so definitely follow them on Instagram @gwubhq for events. And if you like what you hear, you can like it and share it.
